Uncle Mo looks dominant at 1-5 in Wood Memorial

Uncle Mo will try to follow in the footsteps of 11 others who captured the Wood Memorial en route to a Kentucky Derby victory in May.  The undefeated son of Indian Charlie was made the 1-5 morning line favorite against 9 other overmatched rivals.

The only other stakes winners in the field are Toby's Corner, who won the Whirlaway in February at Aqueduct, and Preachintothedevil, who took the NY-bred Champagneforashley Stakes on New Year's Day at Aqueduct.

In terms of speed figures, Uncle Mo towers over the field.  He has broken the 100 barrier twice, earning a 102 Beyer in his debut and a 108 for his Breeders' Cup Juvenile win.  His worst figure was an 89, which was earned in his 3-year-old debut in the Timely Writer, but even that figure is tops in this field.  Toby's Corner did receive an 88 for his Whirlaway win, the only figure that even remotely approaches Uncle Mo.  The next best figure is an 83 that Norman Asbjornson got for his Gotham runner-up finish.

Toby's Corner was installed as the 8-1 second choice, the only other horse listed in single digit odds.

A total of 20 horses have gone on from the Wood to win the Kentucky Derby.  The most recent was Funny Cide in 2003.

agree, zxswordxz, but it could also be his pedigree. but we never know
Maybe we can see the same as 1973 when Secretariat ran third in the Wood. But I doubt that cuz the great Sec had an abscess in the wood. Why wasn't Mo firing on a cylinder? We'll find out in the derby.
Well I guess we did learn something new. He was pretty meek today. Slow fractions and really no response. Let's hope he comes out of this fine.
logrezzio, I like Uncle Mo but have to agree with you. Based on the history and stats since the start of the BC I believe that only Street Sense has been the winner of the BC Juvenile and then came back and won the Kentucky Derby. Hope Mo comes out of this good and gets back on track. However, this sure makes the Derby look way more interesting.
I tried to tell you guys for weeks but you listen to the stupid media....BC Juvenile Champ means nothing as a 3YO...now since he lost to allowance horses I wont get a good price on actual good horses.
A shocker! Uncle Mo goes down!
To mikemoss13: Isn't He perfect won a starter allowance at Aqueduct on March 20th. The race had not been entered in the database.
Mike, that pretty much sums it up. Putting this in more perspective: The other 9 horses: 4 broke maidens in Maiden Claimers, 4 in Maiden Specials, 1 in a NY Maiden Special. Other than these maiden wins, the other 9 horses have only 7 wins to their credit. Two starter allowances, three allowances, one open stake and one NY stake.
None of Mo's competetion won their last race? Sad, sad, sad field.
cigar- my feelings exactly.
well he's not running with the best.... he'll win... clara ... but lets wait and see... later... clara
1-5 might be an overlay vs. this group... will we find out anything new about Mo?
