Turbulent Descent is back in her stall in the Mike Puype barn at Del
Mar after her dominating 3 ¾-length triumph in the Grade I, $250,000
Test Stakes on Saturday, August 6 at Saratoga.
“She’s back here and came out of the race fine,” Puype said. The
Test might be the last race for the 3-year-old filly, a winner of six of
eight career starts with earnings of $858,250, before the $2 million
Breeders’ Cup Ladies Classic in November at Churchill Downs.
“There’s nothing for her at Santa Anita and I don’t want to ship her
(out of state) again before the biggest race of her life,” Puype said.
UPDATING ESPINOZA’S RIDE TO BENEFIT GROOMS
Jockey Victor Espinoza has one win, three seconds and one third place
finish two days into his pledge to donate 100% of his earnings for the
racing week to the California Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Foundation (CTHF),
to be used exclusively to assist southern California racetrack grooms.
“Everybody has done a lot of things for different foundations, but I
never hear about anybody doing something just for the grooms,” said
Espinoza in announcing the plan last week. “The grooms are important for
everybody in horseracing; they take care of the horses more than
anybody, sometimes 24 hours a day,” he continued. “If a horse gets sick
at midnight, who’s going to be there? The groom has to get up. But if
the grooms are sick, they can’t take care of the horses.”
