Triple Crown 2012: More Than Another - What A Triple Crown Means To Me

I'll Have Another wins the 2012 Preakness
Deanna Walsh has seen some great horses, but she is rooting for I'll Have Another, as she writes in the first entry in our series, "What A Triple Crown Win Would Mean To Me".

Having no personal connection to I’ll Have Another, except for this… He is everything I can think of that I would want in a Triple Crown Winner. I vote for the horse - He is game, courageous, loves to run and win, has stellar charisma and great conformation, all over. He is an eye and heart full.

Winning the greatest horse racing series in history would prove that this is indeed not a extinct possibility and indeed a real objective, forever less than a dream and more than a hope. I’ll Have Another is the real deal and if he wins the Belmont Stakes, and clinches the title of 12th Triple Crown Winner, I will sit back and relish and ponder, ‘I’m happy for them, happy for racing and most happy for the horse’. He will be embellished among greats forever, among the likes of the immortals that have engraved memories in my mind, especially the most recent three Triple Crown Winners, Secretariat, Seattle Slew and Affirmed.

I’ve watched all nine of those races on live TV. I’ve picked the winners, rooting on Affirmed ‘The Nerd’ over Alydar, Seattle ‘Black Stallion’ Slew and the no less than perfect “Tremendous running machine” Secretariat. I had no doubt each would be the winner of each of those races. However, It is different for me now, as I understand more realistically how difficult and momentous of an achievement it is to win all three races, the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes and my favorite of the series, the Belmont Stakes.

I’ll Have Another has as much in his future as he can make the third great race out to be. In victory and a sweep, he will defeat my adored other favorites such as Union Rags and Dullahan, not to mention any lesser appreciated challengers that may just have been born to win on the unique day over the large sweeping mile and one-half dirt track, overcoming potential errors the deceptive historical event can muster. I will cry, then I will most certainly celebrate by eating my own pre-prepared homemade “I’ll Have Another cookie” treats in pure delight.

Risne Star was unlucky not to be a Triple winner as dominant as he was in all three races. Risen Star cookies were sold by a n order of the Little SIsters of the Poor and Louie Roussel promised them a percentage of his wins for their support both amterially and spiritually.
Great story from a great racing fan (and nice friend too!! Way to go, Deanna!
Thanks, Deanna, and pass one of those cookies this way please...
Wow - let's hope Saturday adds to your collection of memorable Triple Crown performances!
Great read, Deanna. I'm hoping to be eating some "I'll Have Another" cookies on Saturday evening as well.
