Triple Crown 2012: Fastest Belmont Stakes Winners

Most sports fans know about Secretariat’s fastest winning Belmont Stakes time and margin of victory. Secretariat set a world record for 1 1/2 miles on the dirt when he won the 1973 Belmont in 2:24. Secretariat also holds the fastest 1/2 mile, 3/4 mile, 1 mile and 1 1/4-mile fractions in Belmont history. However, breaking down the fractional times with the top-5 fastest Belmont Stakes races, there are some very close similarities between the races.

Easy Goer and A.P. Indy share the second fastest time in the Belmont Stakes at 2:26. In both Easy Goer and A.P. Indy’s races, they ran :23 1/5 for the opening ¼ mile and :47 for the half mile. For ¾ of a mile, both horses ran 1:11. The pace in 1989, when Easy Goer won, quickened just slightly for the mile and 1 and ¼ mile split. Not only did these two horses run essentially the same race, the 3rd and 4th fastest times in the Belmont Stakes ran almost the same pace but slowed just slightly in the final ¼ of a mile. Point Given in 2001 and Risen Star in 1998 ran 2:26 2/5 for their winning efforts in the Belmont Stakes. Affirmed rounds out the top-5 fastest times, running a time of 2:26 4/5 for the mile and ½.

If I’ll Have Another looks to come close to running a record setting Belmont Stakes race in 2012, look early in the race at the fractional times. More than likely, the pace will have to be :47 for the half-mile and at least 1:11 for the ¾ of a mile.
