Trinniberg vs. Goldencents in BC Sprint Prep

Trinniberg, upset winner of last year’s Grade I Breeders’ Cup Sprint, and Goldencents, winner of this year’s Grade I Santa Anita Derby, loom prominent among an outstanding field of eight 3-year-olds and up in Saturday’s Grade I, $250,000 Santa Anita Sprint Championship at six furlongs, a Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” qualifier to the $1.5 million Breeders’ Cup Sprint Nov. 2 at Santa Anita.

Voted Eclipse Champion Sprinter following his 13-1 Breeders’ Cup triumph, Trinniberg has been winless in three starts since, his most recent out a close second place finish in the Grade II Smile Sprint Handicap at Calder on July 6.

Trained by Bisnath Parboo and owned by his wife, Sherry, Trinniberg, a 4-year-old Kentucky-bred colt by Teuflesberg, shipped west from his South Florida base in mid-September and has had two works at Santa Anita in preparation for Saturday’s Sprint Championship.

Ridden by Willie Martinez in his last 11 starts, Trinniberg will be ridden for the first time Saturday by Jose Valdivia, Jr.  He has five wins and five secondS from 16 starts and he has earned $1,552,836.

Although he disappointed in both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, the Doug O’Neill-trained Goldencents comes off a pair of solid sprint efforts, as he was second in both the Grade I Bing Crosby and Grade II Pat O’Brien Stakes at Del Mar—where he was favored on both occasions.

Owned by W.C. Racing, Dave Kenney and RAP Racing, Goldencents had been ridden in all of his nine career starts by Kevin Krigger, but was replaced by Patrick Valenzuela in the Aug. 25 O’Brien.  He will be ridden for the first time on Saturday by leading man Rafael Bejarano and has drawn a cozy outside post for the Sprint Championship.

A three-time graded stakes winner, Goldencents has an overall mark of 10-4-3-0, and earnings of $1,390,000.

Trained by Ron Ellis, 5-year-old gelding Centralinteligence is one of two 5-year-old geldings in the field and hasn’t run since the biggest win of his life, a 3 ½ length score in the Grade I Triple Bend Handicap at Betfair Hollywood Park on June 29.

Centelligence has two wins from three tries at Santa Anita.  Based at Betfair Hollywood, he has a series of sharp drills for his return, with the most recent being a five furlong gate drill in a minute flat on Sept. 29.

Owned by Amerman Racing Stable LLC and Bongo Racing, Gary Finder and Elias Sabo, Centralintelligence has an overall mark of 12-4-3-1, with earnings of $308,921.  He’ll be ridden for the third time in a row by Victor Espinoza.

Consistent California-bred Points Offthebench, a winner of the Grade I Bing Crosby Stakes at Del Mar, will bid for his fourth consecutive win on Saturday.  Trained by Tim Yakteen, the 4-year-old gelding by Benchmark will be ridden for the second time by Mike Smith.

Points Offthebench has five wins, a second and a third from seven starts.  Owned by Donnie Crevier and Charles Martin, he has earnings of $364,940.

Female Riding sensation Rosie Napravnik, who took last Saturday’s Grade I Chandelier Stakes aboard the Bob Baffert-trained Secret Compass, will fly in to ride upstart Declassify on Saturday for Baffert.  Owned by Kaleem Shah Inc., the 3-year-old colt by Orientate has been idle since a rousing allowance score on June 8.  Unbeaten in two starts, he’s won both by a combined 19 lengths.

Baffert will also saddle Roman Threat, an odds-on winner of the Grade III Los Angeles Handicap two starts back in May, 2012.  Fifth as the 7-5 favorite in the restricted Pirates Bounty Stakes Sept. 4, he’ll be ridden for the first time by red-hot veteran Gary Stevens, who had six wins, three in graded stakes, over the first three days of the meet.

Owned and bred by Patti and Hal Earnhardt, Roman Threat, a 5-year-old gelding by Roman Ruler, has two wins and a second from four lifetime starts.

The complete field for the Grade I Santa Anita Sprint Championship, to be run as the ninth race on a 10-race program Saturday, with jockeys and weights in post position order:  Gonna Fly Now, Joe Talamo, 119; Declassify, Rosie Napravnik, 118; Centralintelligence, Victor Espinoza, 124; Disntinctiv Passion, Edwin Maldonado, 118; Trinniberg, Jose Valdivia, Jr., 121; Roman Threat, Gary Stevens, 119; Points Offthebench, Mike Smith, 124, and Goldencents, Rafael Bejarano, 123.

Keep an eye on Centralintelligence.Only horse that is gonna sit back and watch these babies burn up the early fractions.I can hear Trevor noe "ON THE GRANDSTAND SIDE- he looks like he just jumped on the track.
He has a good chance.
silly birds and their chirping. and going with my boy goldy in this race. i like distinctiv passion as well
Thanks, amino. The Equibase stats looked odd. I think Gary's riding him. Glad you're back.
Goblin, according to Baffert assistant Mike Marlow, “ He had a lot of little things when he was two and three. We had to (geld) him because he was tough to handle and wasn’t paying attention to his training. (Baffert) he still throws it at me. He’s asked, ‘Why did you cut that horse?’ I said, ‘What do you want, a race horse or a yard ornament?” He was pointing for last year’s BC Sprint but not sure what happened then.
Distinctiv Passion
Roman Threat is 5y/o and has only started four times? Is that correct? If so, what problems has he had?
Roman Threat >> Is he ready, Ed?
Trinni, Centraletc, Roman Threat, Goldencents.
Neither of them will win, I like the baffert duo.
Please don't wake the dead, amino. Gracias.
Equibase says Spinner >> In other news, bigbill859, Carlos and I have been e-mailing about Getting The Bad Guys and such and reminiscing about when you 1st swung into HRN like a “Wrecking Ball” {Nice career move, Miley} blasting one and all >> Good times << and how now looking at your recent posts, you’re all about respecting opinions {usually}. What the hell happened to you? Please disregard this if you could give a rat’s ass :D
