Today's Kentucky Derby Contender Works (3-29-11)

Archarcharch takes the Southwest (Top story)

Kentucky Derby contender

workouts for today (Tuesday, March 29)

(with HRN Derby rankings):

Today's Derby contender works included a seven furlong move from El Camino Real Derby hero Silver Medallion. The Santa Anita Derby is up next for the Steve Asmussen trainee. Rebel show finisher Archarcharch went a solid five furlongs in Arkansas.

#17 Archarcharch – 5f in 1:00.80 (4/20) at Oaklawn Park.

#41 Silver Medallion – 7f in 1:23.60 at Santa Anita Park.

[Will Silver Medallion handle dirt in the Santa Anita Derby? Can Archarcharch make some noise in the Arkansas Derby? Log in and rank your 2011 Kentucky Derby contenders!]

Other March 29 Works:

Tech Fall (#72) breezed an easy 4f in :51 (16/29) at Oaklawn Park. Humble And Hungry (#88) traveled 6f in 1:13 (1/2) over the all-weather surface at Sagamore Farm. Chipshot (#176) drilled a 5f bullet in 1:00.40 (1/20) at Oaklawn Park.

Notes:

Trained Bob Baffert is still undecided between the Santa Anita Derby and Wood Memorial for Jaycito. 4th place Louisiana Derby finisher Elite Alex would need a 1-2 finish in the Arkansas Derby to make the starting gate on the first Saturday in May. He was bred in Canada so a Queen’s Plate run is not out of the question. If he does not go for the Kentucky Derby where does that leave Calvin Borel? Super Saver’s baby bro Brethren is a possibility.
