Kentucky Derby contender

workouts for today (Tuesday, Feb. 22)

(with HRN Derby rankings):

Today's Derby contender works included a pair of four furlong bullets. Leave of Absence earned his bullet at Palm Meadows and Lumberyard Jack was exercising in New Orleans. The latter is entered in the 5th race at Fair Grounds on Feb 26 and could try the Louisiana Derby with a big effort on Saturday. The one mile and seventy yard Optional Claiming route has also drawn Don Dolce, currently ranked #123 on the HRN Top 250 Derby list.

#41 Cool Blue Red Hot – Easy 5f breeze in 1:03 (10/11) at Palm Meadows.

#61 Wegner – Handy 4f move in :46.60 (4/51) at Santa Anita.

#70 Sovereign Default – Breezed 4f in :47.60 (2/33) at Palm Meadows.

Notes:

Todd Pletcher and Mike Repole have chosen the March 12 Timely Writer, a $100,000 non-graded flat mile affair around one-turn at Gulfstream Park for Uncle Mo's (#1) first start of 2011. The top three Southwest finishers (Archarcharch, J P's Gusto, Elite Alex) will all move on to the March 19 Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park. Archarcharch received an 89 BSF for his Southwest victory. Ribo Bobo (#106) is entered in the 3rd race at Gulfstream Park on Feb 24. The Optional Claiming turf route has drawn a field of seven plus a pair of main track only entrants.

What the Nation is saying about Today's Kentucky Derby Contender Works (2-22-11)...

No problem, Awesome Patriot is cut out to be a good one. Beat Riveting Reason in an Allowance, RR most recently was nosed out of winning the Robet B. Lewis. This may be Baffert's biggest Derby hope actually, unless Jaycito overcomes the adversity that's surrounded him thus far in his career: bolting in BC Juvenile, trainer change, missed works, missed races, and eventually not running untill at least March.
Thanks for pointing that out ajump08. I fixed my error...sorry about that. The Baffert horse was Awesome Patriot from Feb 21 - 6f in 1:11.40 (1/13) at Hollywood Park.
Beamer is a Carl Nafzger horse based in Florida, who is the Baffert horse you were refering to? It certainly couldn't have been Beamer, but is impressive to post that on the normal (in terms of time) Hollywood surface
