Tiz a Minister Among Gold Rush Nominees

Betfair Hollywood Park logo.

Tiz a Minister, who finished third in the Grade II San Felipe Stakes and fourth in last Saturday’s Santa Anita Derby, and Doinghardtimeagain, who won the inaugural Soviet Problem Stakes last Dec. 9, are among 203 nominees to the 14th California Gold Rush.

A series of eight races for horses bred or sired in California – including a pair of maiden events (the Alphabet Kisses and NTRA Stakes) with $60,000 purses – the Gold Rush, which will be run Saturday, April 27, highlights the opening weekend of Betfair Hollywood Park’s 49-day Spring/Summer meet.

A son of Ministers Wild Cat and the Cee’s Tizzy mare Tiz a Mistress, Tiz a Mistress is among 18 3-year-olds nominated to the $300,000-guaranteed Snow Chief Stakes, which will be run at 1 1/8 miles over Cushion Track.

Owned by S.A.Y. Racing, LLC and trained by Paul Aguirre, Tiz a Minister, who was claimed for $40,000 by his current connections last Aug. 2 at Del Mar, was only defeated by one length by Hear the Ghost in the San Felipe.

A last-to-first winner of the California Breeders’ Champion Stakes Jan. 26 at Santa Anita, Tiz a Minister has won two of 11 and earned $327,780.

Other nominees to the Snow Chief include Echo Eddie winner Omega Star, the Bob Baffert-trained Surfcup and Storm Fighter, who finished sixth in the Santa Anita Derby after an easy maiden victory March 2 for owner-breeder Golden Eagle Farm Investment, L.P. and trainer Bruce Headley.

Doinghardtimeagain, who comes off a 3 ½ length victory in the Evening Jewel Stakes March 30, is among 15 nominees to the Melair Stakes. Offering a guaranteed purse of $250,000, the Melair is restricted to 3-year-old fillies and will be run at 1 1/16 miles over Cushion Track.

Trained by Hall of Famer Jerry Hollendorfer for owner-breeders Tommy Town Thoroughbreds, LLC, Doinghardtimeagain has won three of seven and has been worse than second only once in her career. The Ministers Wild Cat filly out of the Conquistador Cielo mare Silver Hawk Lady has earned $346,270.

The $70,000 Grey Memo Stakes, which is run at seven furlongs, had the most nominations, luring 33 while the $70,000 Warren’s Thoroughbred Stakes, which is for  fillies and mares at seven furlongs, had 28 nominations.

Entries for the California Gold Rush will be taken Wednesday, April 24.
