The Queen's Plate that Inglorious Mastered

Inglorious wins the 2011 Queen's Plate
Donver Stable’s Inglorious has become the third filly in the past 20 years to capture the $ 1 million Queen’s Plate Stakes, the first jewel in Canada’s Triple Crown of Racing.
The Josie Carroll trainee defeated 16 colts and geldings en route to a fifth consecutive score over Woodbine’s Polytrack surface.
Inglorious returned $9 as the third-choice in the field, the largest since 1999. Hippolytus, a 60-1 outsider, was second, while Pender Harbour was third.
Returning home after an unsuccessful campaign towards the Kentucky Oaks, Inglorious won back to back stakes, scoring by 1 ½ lengths in the La Lorgnette and capturing the most important race in Canada for three-year-old Canadian-bred fillies, the $500,000 Woodbine Oaks on June 5.
Three weeks later, piloted by Woodbine's leading rider Luis Contreras in his first ever Plate mount, the bay filly proved she was also the best three-year-old Canadian-bred of either sex.
The daughter of Hennessy settled towards the back of the pack on the outside. Heading into the first turn, she was situated in 11th about three paths out from the rail, nestled right in behind the 9-5 favorite Check Your Soul.
The pace was relatively quick (:47 3/5 and 1:12 1/5) and Contreras was content to keep Inglorious relaxed, out of trouble and in the perfect spot to keep an eye Check Your Soul.
On the second turn, Patrick Husbands decided it was time to go for Check Your Soul and put the Perfect Soul colt into a drive. He made a strong wide rush and moved from seventh to second by the quarter pole.
Contreras took this as a cue and asked Inglorious to keep pace with Check Your Soul. She cruised along behind the colt and was only two lengths behind with a quarter mile to go.
At the top of the stretch, Inglorious tipped to the outside and, once again, she delivered a potent final surge with long bounding strides, seizing command at the sixteenth pole and drawing off to a clear lead within a few jumps. She was under the wire a comfortable 2 ½-length winner in a time of 2:02.63.
According to Trakus, the trip Contreras engineered for Inglorious resulted in the fourth highest total (6726 ft.) for ground travelled. Only Imhotep (6737 ), Check Your Soul (6735) and Maple Leaf Kitten (6745) were higher.
The $600,000 winner’s share of the Plate purse boosted her earnings to $1,250,000.
The victory is Carroll's second score in Canada's most important race. She also connected with Edenwold in 2006.
Inglorious is the 34th filly to win the Plate and just the fifth to sweep the Woodbine Oaks and the Plate, following in the recent footsteps of Dance Smartly (1991) and her daughter Dancethruthedawn (2001). La Lorgnette performed the double in 1985 and Flaming Page was the first to win both races in 1962.
Earlier this year, Inglorious was named the Queen’s Plate Winterbook choice on the strength of her stakes double as a two-year-old and a graded stakes placing against Kathmanblu in the Rachel Alexandra at The Fair Grounds on February 19. She is the first three-year-old since Alydeed (1992) to overcome the ‘Winterbook jinx’ and strike Plate gold.
The second jewel of the Triple Crown is at Fort Erie on July 17.
