Neil Drysdale is hopeful The Lumber Guy can rebound in Saturday’s
Grade II San Carlos Stakes at seven furlongs after recovering from a
quarter crack that resulted in a disappointing performance in the Grade I
Malibu Stakes on Dec. 26.
The Lumber Guy worked five furlongs on Santa Anita’s fast main
track Sunday in a bullet 58.40 under Garrett Gomez, who rides the
runner-up in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint for the first time competitively
in the San Carlos.
“That’s the plan,” Drysdale said when asked about the San Carlos after the drill. “We’ll see how he comes out of this work.”
Probable for the San Carlos: Drill, Julien Leparoux; Justin
Phillip, Mike Smith; Midnight Transfer, Rafael Bejarano; Sahara Sky, Joe
Talamo; and The Lumber Guy, Garrett Gomez.
