The Eclipse Awards: Very Early Predictions

While the debates rage on over who will, and who will not, be voted in as the 2011 Eclipse Award winners, I’ve decided to take a somewhat different approach. I’ve fired up the ZATT time machine and jumped forward just a little bit. Call it a fool’s mission if you must, but I’m only trying to have a little fun with some reasonably well thought out projections for the 2012 racing season.

Clearly my juvenile picks are shots in the dark, but they represent a couple of yearlings that I was very impressed with at their respective sales…

Champion Two-Year-Old Colt – (Midnight Lute – Secret Liaison, by Housebuster)

Champion Two-Year-Old Filly – (Indian Charlie – Lu Ravi, by A.P. Indy)

I consider Union Rags to be the best two-year-old I saw this year and the grand looking youngster should only improve for trainer Michael Matz as he learns more about racing. Miss Netta is a dark horse, but I have a strong feeling that we have seen nothing close her best just yet…

Champion Three-Year-Old Male – Union Rags

Champion Three-Year-Old Filly – Miss Netta

PrePeg? Yes, PrePeg. This is a horse I loved this spring, and I believe a healthy 2012 for him could culminate with a win in the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita. I gave strong consideration to Royal Delta on the female side, but in the end, Grace is just too good…

Champion Older Male Horse – Premier Pegasus

Champion Older Female Horse – Havre De Grace

We are due for a three-year-old champion sprinter and who better than this talented Florida bred for trainer, Teresa Pompay. A healthy Turbulent Descent gets the job done next year…

Champion Sprinter – Currency Swap

Champion Female Sprinter – Turbulent Descent

Mr. Commons and Winter Memories are two horses of great potential that I have loved from the beginning. In 2012, they will realize that potential…

Champion Male Turf Horse – Mr. Commons

Champion Female Turf Horse - Winter Memories

You already know my early pick for the Breeders’ Cup Classic…

Horse of the Year – Premier Pegasus

There you have it, eleven predictions sure to entertain a least a ghost of a chance for 2012 glory. Don’t laugh, this was not easy … Have any very early predictions of your own?

Older Comments about The Eclipse Awards: Very Early Predictions...

First 2/yo is 0 for 1, Souper Knight. Second 2/yo is 1 for 7, Natural Rush.
3yo Male: Union Rags, 3yo Female: Killer Graces, Older Male: Animal Kingdom, Older Female: Awesome Feather, Turf Male: Ultimate Eagle, Turf Female: Stopshoppingmaria, Sprint Male: Jackson Bend, Sprint Female: Awesome Maria
Ahh, sorry about that! Here's my picks: 3yoM: Hansen, I've liked him from the get-go, and think his juvenile was no fluke, he is better than Union Rags and the lot. My dark horse for this award is Creative Cause. 3yoF: Weemissfrankie or Grace Hall. I think as they mature they'll overtake My Miss Aurelia. Older Female: Awesome Feather, if she keeps winning she'll be unstoppable. Royal Delta or Zazu; tremendous potential in both, and both willl be more mature next year. Grace will have to deal with more mature runners in this year's 3yo crop. They'll probably overtake her. Older Male: I like Pegasus, but I want to see how he looks upon returning before throwing him in. So my current pick is Game On Dude, if he stays consistent, he'll be the one to beat. Turf Horse Male: Agreed Mr. Commons, he ran great in the BC Mile, 5th not beaten too much, and could be a force. Another with great potential. Also want to see if Acclamation keeps his form. He'll be in the running if he does. Turf Female: Star Billing, Shirreffs could take both divisions with the two very talented 3yos. She's got as much talent as Mr. Commons. HOY: I'm going with Hansen, I've loved him all fall, and his BC was super impressive. If he keeps his form, he'll be the on to beat. I'm hoping he shows us great things next year. He's my Derby pick, and the one I'll be watching next year. But I think Awesome Feather could be dark horse for HOY, should she keep up her winning ways. No opinion on the 2yos yet.
Hmmm, very interesting discussion. I know I;m late to all this but here's my two cents:
hmmm....
Oh...hard to pick so far ahead! But I am looking for Game On Dude to have a great year next year and maybe get HOTY. I love Miss Netta, too!
Older horse: Mucho Macho Man
Won't Frankel be Champion Turf male if he wins the BC Mile?
Think that Winter Memories, Mr. Commons, Creative Cause, Weemissfrankie, Grace Hall, and Shack should all do well next year. Looking out for these horses. Also Prayer for Relief too.
PrePeg!!!!
Awesome Feather could throw an interesting wrench into the Older Female category if she keeps on winning.
Enjoying these picks ... keep 'em coming guys!
Champion Male turf: BRILLIANT SPEED
Older Horse: COIL
Awesome Feather will win Older Female over HDG
I'm looking forward to the older horse division next year. MMM looked extremely good in his last, AK is coming back and he can run on anything and compete with the best of them. PP's SF was devestating and I cannot wait to see if he can come back and look just as good. The three year olds look promising. The top three have breeding to sugest that more distance will not be a probelm. MMA if she improves next year, may be good enough to go to the Derby. Caleb and Shack will make the sprints and miles very interesting next year.
Last I heard he was jogging around SA Track..connections taking their time with him. Was my KY Derby Pick at 2..hopefully he can come back 100%.
Re: PrePeg- on 10/7 Raxon Cho- We will start training prepeg soon we will probably point him towards the strub series or other races at santa anita
any news on prepegs return he hasn't had any workouts in quite some time
Like the Miss Netta pick. She will win a big one next year. hopefully at some good odds for us.
