The 2012 Breeders’ Cup
Juvenile Fillies will be run on November 2nd, at Santa Anita, as
part of the predominantly filly Friday. The race continues to be sponsored by
the Grey Goose vodka company. So make yourself a Bloody Mary, a Cosmopolitan,
or a Black Russian and enjoy these historical fun facts about the two year-old
race for fillies.
B – Bob Baffert has won twice with Indian
Blessing 2007 and Silverbulletday 1998.
C – Caressing was the biggest long shot to
win at 47-1 in 2000 at Churchill Downs.
D – Deputy Minister sired consecutive
winners with Go For Wand 1989 and Open Mind in 1988.
E –Eight and a half lengths is the
largest winning margin by Countess Diana in 1997.
F - Fran's Valentine won the inaugural
running of the Juvenile Fillies in 1984, only to be disqualified and placed
last. She was sent off at odds of 74.80-1.
G – Go For Wand won the Juvenile Fillies in
1989 and was an Eclipse winner in 1989 and 1990. She tragically broke down and
died in the 1990 Breeders’ Cup Distaff.
Highest Beyer Speed Figure for this race is 107 and was recorded by Tempera in 2001 at Belmont Park.
I – Indian
Blessing 2007 is one of eight unbeaten fillies to have won the race with My
Miss Aurelia 2011, Awesome Feather 2010, Dreaming of Anna 2006, Halfbridled
2003, Storm Flag Flying 2002, Flanders 1994, and Meadow Star 1990.
Kentucky is the breeding state for all but six of the fillies.
L – Last
time the Breeders’ Cup was hosted by Belmont Park happened in 2005 when Folklore won the Juvenile Fillies.
M – Meadow Star, who was ridden by Jose
Santos and was trained by LeRoy Jolley, won with the shortest odds of .20-1 in
N – New
Jersey-bred and future Hall of Famer Open Mind won the race in 1988 at Churchill Downs.
Odds on winners have taken the filly juvenile 17 out of 28 times.
Q – Questing, who is now at the top of the
three year-old filly division after her impressive Saratoga wins in the CCA
Oaks and the Alabama, ran fifth in last year’s Juvenile Filly at odds of
Range of winning BSFs since 1992 is from 86 to 107. Four were in the 80’s, ten
in the 90’s, and four over 100.
S - The
names of six winners begin with the letter S: She Be Wild 2009, Stardom Bound
2008, Sweet Catomine 2004, Storm Flag Flying 2004, Silverbulletday, 1998, and
Storm Song 1996.
Two million dollars became the purse of the Juvenile Fillies in 2005.
U – Unbridled, who won the 1990 BC Classic,
is the sire of Halfbridled 2003 winner of the Juvenile Filly.
Valenzuela (Pat), Velasquez (Jorge), and Velazquez (John) have ridden five
Juvenile Filly winners between them.
W – Win
and You’re In. As part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge series, there are only
three Win and You’re In races for the Juvenile Fillies: Chandelier Stakes at
Santa Anita on Sept. 30, Darley Alcibiades at Keeneland on Oct. 5, and Frizette
at Belmont Park on October 6.
X – Xtra Heat finished 10th in
the 2000 running with odds of 30.10-1. Xtra Heat went on to a long and
successful career including the 2001 Eclipse Award for three year-old fillies. In
35 starts she went 26 - 5 – 2 with earnings of $2,389,635.
Y – You finished fourth in the 2001 race as
the .95-1 favorite. You won five
grade one stakes in her career and $2,101,353.
Zero is the number of times that Todd Pletcher, the master of two year-old racing, has won the Juvenile Fillies.
