Talamo Takes Over Social Media On Thursday

joe talamo 179

Joe Talamo is a fine, young race rider. Joe Talamo is also – being young and sharp – very attuned to all things digital, like Twitter and Facebook and Instagram, the things that fill up the new world of cyberspace.

So who better, then, to take on – and “takeover” – an assignment at Del Mar to rock its world for a day on-line in the world of Social Media.

Remember this one, hash tag hipsters --  #TalamoTakeover.

On Thursday (8/8) Del Mar will, in effect, hand the wheel over to Talamo as he spends his day filling the track’s Twitter account with his daily doings – large and small, indoors and out, old and new – all while going through a day-in-the-life of a highly successful Thoroughbred jockey at the highly competitive Del Mar meeting.

Talamo will start your Twitter day when he starts his – right around 4:30 a.m. – as he’s off to the track and a morning of workouts on horses he’ll be riding in the days ahead. He’ll take his “tweets” all the way through until the last race of the day, all the while • discussing his mounts for the day • recalling his early memories of being a jockey (Thursday is “throwback” day on Twitter) • sharing his world in the jockeys room • fielding and answering fan questions • offering immediate thoughts after each race.

Del Mar’s idea for #TalamoTakeover is patterned after Nike’s successful “takeover” by professional basketballer Kobe Bryant last December to promote the launch of his new sneaker. Bryant used the Nike Twitter account for a day to give fans access to places they wound never be able to see otherwise (the L.A. Lakers’ practice facility, him icing his ankles in the training room, his own house), as well as answering their questions. The event made Bryant – who did not have a Twitter account to that point -- a Twitter believer and since then he has attracted more than 3.1 million followers.

Del Mar will send out a general media alert on Wednesday (8/7), as well as having both it and Talamo tweeting out to their respective on-line followers about the following day’s “takeover.”  Del Mar currently has more than 13,600 Twitter followers, while Talamo has more than 13,300.

Talamo, 23, hails from Marrero, LA, just across the river from New Orleans. He’s been a regular on the Southern California racing scene since 2007 and has established himself as a Top 10 rider on one of the most competitive riding circuits in the world.

Del Mar’s 37-day race meeting runs through Wednesday, September 4.

I'm looking forward to this. If you don't do Twitter yet, it might be a good way to ease into it following @DelMarRacing and @joetalamo
Joe Talamo is usally pretty good but he has been ridng poorly at Del MAr; horese are jusr not responding for him. He gets live horses and just does nothing; he is a play against and he knows it.
