Sutherland Gets on the Board at Del Mar

Chantal Sutherland after the 2012 Hollywood Gold Cup

The first win of the meeting for Chantal Sutherland-Kruse came in Friday’s third race aboard 36-1 shot Jaya Roo for trainer Troy Taylor. It established precedent for a string of longshot winners in the Pick Six that produced a carryover of $619,482 to the Saturday program.

It also lifted Sutherland-Kruse’s confidence for more trips to the winners’ circle in the future her agent, Tommy Ball, said Saturday morning.

“She had worked that horse in the morning and was glad to get the call,” Ball said. “That’s what usually happens, so we’re hoping to work more horses in the morning and get more chances to ride in the afternoon.

“She was glad to get that first win out of the way and get the pressure off. Being on a longshot makes it that much better. People take notice.”

Trakus Facts For Friday

In Friday’s finale, fourth place finisher Excessive Tequila ran 1.30 seconds faster than front-running winner Advisory in the final quarter, and was 1.21 seconds faster in just the final furlong.
