Sutherland Cleared to Ride in Pacific Classic

Chantal Sutherland after the 2012 Hollywood Gold Cup
Del Mar stewards on Wednesday morning were in receipt of a FAX from the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) granting Chantal Sutherland a stay of a four-day suspension to allow her to ride Game On Dude in the TVG Pacific Classic.

Sutherland was assessed a suspension, August 25-28, for infractions of use of whip rules in England while riding in an international team competition on Saturday at Ascot. The $1 million TVG Pacific Classic is Sunday, August 26. Sutherland is the regular rider of Game On Dude and has victories in the 2011 Santa Anita Handicap and 2012 Hollywood Gold Cup on the Bob Baffert-trained horse.

The FAX from the BHA, sent under the signature of Angela Smith, was in response to a request from Sutherland’s agent, Tommy Ball, that Sutherland be able to defer the Sunday racing day of suspension to ride the Grade I Pacific Classic and other races on the card.

The BHA missive, which included a copy of the applicable British rules, said that Sutherland could defer the suspension day of the 26th to Wednesday, August 29.

Del Mar’s stewards, Tom Ward, Scott Chaney and Kim Sawyer, were to confer on the matter Wednesday morning, but were expected to allow the deferment.
