Stopchargingmaria Captures Demoiselle

Heading into the Grade 2, $400,000 Demoiselle this past week, trainer Todd Pletcher remarked how he was surprised Stopchargingmaria hadn't earned a higher speed figure for winning the Grade 3 Tempted on November 3 considering how powerful a performance it appeared to be.

On Saturday, the 2-year-old Tale of the Cat filly backed up Pletcher's impression of her, holding off uncoupled stablemate Got Lucky by a neck to win the Demoiselle at Aqueduct Racetrack.

Owned by Repole Stable and ridden by Javier Castellano, Stopchargingmaria ran the 1 1/8-mile dirt race in a time of 1:52.62. Got Lucky, a maiden making just her second start, ran gamely up the rail for second, a head in front of Penwith.

Lexi Morgan, America and Mlle. Minuit completed the order of finish.

"I was pleased with both of their races," said Pletcher, the country's leading trainer, of Stopchargingmaria and Got Lucky. "Big effort by Got Lucky in her second start. The thing I thought [Stopcharginginmaria] had going for her is a good foundation and the fact that she has a good mind. She's very ratable. She's kind. She's not the kind you have to worry about getting too headstrong, but it's a mile and an eighth, and it's a long way for 2-year-old fillies."

When the gate opened, Penwith jumped out and set a slow pace, 25.38 seconds for the opening quarter-mile and 50.65 seconds for the half. Castellano set up Stopchargingmaria in a good stalking position in the two path, just to the leader's outside and then made her bid at the quarter pole.

Got Lucky, who raced inside throughout, moved up on the turn and attacked in the lane. While Stopchargingmaria slowly assumed command, Penwith, racing between horses, drifted in slightly and Got Lucky hesitated.

"Second time out, in tight; it was a little scary in there," said Got Lucky's rider Mike Smith, a Hall of Famer. "With a little improvement, I think she beats them."

Stopchargingmaria went off as the 4-5 favorite and paid $3.90 for a $2 win bet.

The win was the third in her five-race career. The $240,000 first-place purse increased her lifetime earnings to $548,000.

This one's my early favorite for the Oaks. I like how she was able to win despite giving up 6 pounds to the entire field. For a baby that's a lot of weight. Unfortunately unless they send her to Santa Anita (and this is a Repole/Pletcher filly, so that won't happen) there are no Grade I's to put her in until the Oaks. And I'd like to see her win against some Grade I competition, which she has not done yet.
