State of Play back on turf in Transylvania

Team Valor International’s State of Play, winner of the With Anticipation (G2) last September at Saratoga, heads a field of seven 3-year-olds entered Tuesday for the 24th running of the $100,000 Transylvania (G3) at 1 1/16 miles on the turf Friday.

 

The Transylvania serves as the feature race on the opening day of the 15-day Spring Meet that runs through April 27. Friday’s 10-race card begins at 1:05 p.m. (ET) with the Transylvania carded as the ninth race with a 5:13 p.m. post time.

 

Trained by Graham Motion, State of Play won the John Battaglia Memorial at Turfway Park on March 3 in his most recent start. John Velazquez has the mount on State of Play, who will break from post position one and carry 123 pounds.

 

Another colt that figures to attract interest Friday in the Transylvania is Fletcher and Carolyn Gray’s Icon Ike. Trained by Larry Jones, Icon Ike is undefeated in three starts on the grass and in his most recent start won the Black Gold at Fair Grounds in which he defeated Hero of Order, who came back to win Sunday’s Louisiana Derby (G2).

 

Miguel Mena has the mount on Icon Ike, who will break from post position seven and carry 118 pounds.

 

The field for the Transylvania, from the inside out, is as follows: State of Play (Velazquez, 123 pounds), Wayward Sailor (Alan Garcia, 118), Travel Advisory (Manny Cruz, 118), Saturday Launch (Jesus Castanon, 118), Monastic (Julien Leparoux, 118), Silver Max (Robby Albarado, 118) and Icon Ike (Mena, 118).
