Spurious Precision: reason to doubt the accuracy or precision of a
There was no doubting the winner
of this year’s edition of the Saratoga
Special (G-2). Spurious Precision entered
the race as the post time favorite. He
was the only colt in the field of six runners field with a win over the deep Saratoga dirt track. The Rick Violette
trainee burst out of the gate running with Southern Honor,
Drum Roll and Dan
The Tin Man hot on his heels. Spurious
Precision flew through the first quarter in :21.35 seconds. Passing the half mile
pole in :44.02, only Drum Roll was able to keep up with the blazing Spurious
Precision. By mid-stretch, the courageous
Drum Roll had
all that he wanted of Spurious Precision and faded to fourth. Spurious Precision, ridden confidently
by Alan Garcia,
opened up on the field and flashed under the wire five lengths in front of
longshot He’s So
Fine, getting the 6 ½ furlongs in 1:16.53.
Spurious Precision’s sire High
Cotton was a Grade 3 level runner on the track. The Florida-based stallion was
eighth on last year’s first crop sire list and he is currently 13th
on the second crop sire list. His best runner
to date is Hopeful and Amsterdam Stakes winner Currency Swap. High Cotton’s offspring are precocious
sprinter/milers and none have won past 1 1/16 miles.

The Canadian-bred Scarlet Combo (Scarlet
Ibis - Don't Combo, by Right Combination), the dam of Spurious Precision, was a
claiming level sprinter. She was a good
mare, completing her career with a 7-4-1-0 ($52,770) record. Besides Spurious
Precision, Scarlet Combo bore four other foals of racing age. None own
blacktype. Scarlet Combo is a half sister to three listed stakes winners who
won between six furlongs to 1 1/8 miles over dirt. One has to go back to the
fourth generation of this distaff family to find graded stakes horses.
Spurious Precision’s damsire Scarlet
Ibis was a lightly raced, New York-bred stakes sprinter/miler. He sired only 13
blacktype runners. As a broodmare sire, Spurious
Precision is his first stakes winner.

Spurious Precision is a muscular
colt with the compact body of a miler. He has a powerful, stride with slightly high
knee action. He has a smooth gait with excellent
reach. Spurious Precision is professional on the track, running straight
without ducking or drifting and he has no paddling movements.
Spurious Precision has the pedigree of a sprinter miler. If he can
harness his formidable speed, he could last 1 1/6 miles against graded stakes
competitors. Spurious Precision carries stamina in his third and fourth
generations through Intermediate/Classic Chef-de-race A.P. Indy, High
Cotton’s damsire. The Classic Chef His
Majesty and Stout Chef Round Table are found in the third and fourth
generations of Spurious Precision distaff line.
Unfortunately, the farther one goes back into the pedigree, the less
influence these bloodlines have. On rare occasions, these bloodlines will carry
through to a current generation.
The colt’s trainer Rick Violette,
Jr. indicated in an after-race interview that he felt Spurious
Precision could handle running two turns. The lightning fast colt's next goal is the Champagne Stakes on October 6 at Belmont Park.
