Shackleford, Twinspired Make Derby Field

2011 Kentucky Derby

The defections of The Factor and J P’s Gusto on Tuesday paved the way for Shackleford and Twinspired to make the Kentucky Derby starting gate.

Shackleford was on the upswing and had won two straight before getting dusted in the Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2). The Florida Derby (G1) was his breakout race as the Dale Romans trainee set a fast pace and was caught in the final strides by Dialed In. The speedy son of Forestry gets his stamina from dam sire Unbridled and looms a pace factor at the very least on the first Saturday in May.

Twinspired arguably ran the best race in the Blue Grass Stakes (G1). The synthetic specialist was the only horse near the lead to be around at the finish in Keeneland’s showcase. He never fired in his only conventional dirt start at Remington Park late last year so it remains to be seen how he will handle the Churchill Downs oval.
