My Favorite
Setsuko at Santa Anita

Setsuko, who faded to last of nine in the stretch in the Pacific Classic, was gelded on Tuesday, Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella reported on Wednesday morning.

The Pacific Classic result was the latest in a series of disappointments that has left the son of 2004 Pacific Classic winner Pleasantly Perfect and the Mr. Prospector mare Dance With Grace, 1-for-16 lifetime, albeit with earnings of $471,686.

Setsuko was third to Bourbon Bay as the 3-2 favorite in the Grade III Cougar II Handicap on July 29 in his previous start of the meeting.

“Now we’ll give him a rest and point him for the Santa Anita meeting,” Mandella said. “Maybe he’ll be a better racehorse as a gelding.”

What the Nation is saying about Setsuko Has Been Gelded...

MZ, true he was not the sole culprit. Game on dude played a pretty big role in the mess as well
Oh, sorry, shadow mo, okay the Santa Anita Handicap. Well, I'm one of the ones that didn't think that pin-ball game was T.C.'s fault entirely..
Big Cap as in Santa Anita Handicap.
Setsuko, 1 in 16 was not going to win the P.C. and T.C. had nothing to do with Setsuko coming in 9th, except that since T.C was in the race that meant that Setsuko couldn't have been 8th.
Harsh. poor bastard. If TC woulda run straight in the big cap this guy would have won and likely would still have all his parts. Hope he stays healthy and does some damage in the Handicap ranks over the next few years.
I feel very badly for Setsuko. I can't imagine how the guys feel. Scared and sick to their stomachs, I bet.
That's tough love, Richard!
Maybe the ultimate equipment change will help him turn things around.
