Scherer Magic Might Try Turf Next

Hollywood Juvenile Champion Scherer Magic worked five furlongs on the Jimmy Durante Turf course in 1:01.80 on Thursday. A move which trainer John Sadler was pleased with and, he said, opens the possibilities for the next start for the Doneraile Court gelding who was fifth as the even-money favorite in the August 5 Best Pal Stakes.

"He could go in the (Oak Tree) Juvenile Turf or the Futurity,” Sadler said. “We’ll decide later.” The Oak Tree Juvenile Turf, newly established this year, is one mile on turf with a $100,000 purse and is a prep for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf in November at Santa Anita. The Grade I $300,000 Del Mar Futurity is seven furlongs on Polytrack, the traditional decider of the meeting’s 2-year-old champion.
