Scherer Magic Faces Seven in Best Pal

Scherer Magic, who provided a quick return on  investment for owners Gary and Cecil Barber after they claimed him for $50,000 by winning the Hollywood Juvenile Championship a month later, will be trying to build on his burgeoning reputation Sunday when he competes in the Grade II $150,000 Best Pal Stakes at Del Mar.

The 42nd running of the 6 ½ furlong Best Pal Stakes attracted a field of eight two-year-olds in the final major steppingstone to the Grade I $300,000 Del Mar Futurity on closing day of the 2012 meeting Wednesday, September 5.

Scherer Magic, a gelded son of Doneraile Court,  was haltered by trainer John Sadler from a maiden claiming race June 14 at Betfair Hollywood Park which he won by more than seven lengths.

He returned in the Hollywood Juvenile Championship and  was equally impressive in scoring by 2 ½ lengths under regular rider Joe Talamo who has the mount again in the Best Pal.

The Best Pal will provide a rematch with Scherer Magic for Amarish, the 2-5 favorite in the Hollywood Juvenile Championship who finished a distant sixth after an early duel. Amarish had been unbeaten in two starts, including an easy triumph in the Willard Proctor Memorial. Edwin Maldonado will be aboard again Sunday.

Also entered in the Best Pal are the stakes-winning filly Miss Empire (Kevin Krigger), Heir of Storm (Martin Garcia), Moreno (Victor Espinoza), Heir Kitty (David Flores), K Court (Yuichi Fukunaga) and Know More (Garrett Gomez).

Post time for the first of nine races Sunday is 2 p.m., with the Best Pal Stakes carded in the eighth slot.
