Scarlet Strike Hopes to Pounce in Sharp Cat

Second behind Executiveprivilege in the Grade I Chandelier Stakes Sept. 29 at Santa Anita, Scarlet Strike will have six opponents in the $100,000 Sharp Cat Stakes Sunday at Betfair Hollywood Park.

Restricted to 2-year-old fillies and run at 1 1/16 miles over Cushion Track, the Sharp Cat is a prep for the Grade I, $500,000 guaranteed Hollywood Starlet, which will be run Dec. 8. The Sharp Cat is the eighth of nine races Sunday. Post time is 12:30 p.m. Track gates at Betfair Hollywood Park will open at 10 a.m.

In conjunction with Veteran’s Day, active duty service members – with military identification – and veterans will receive free general admission.

Owned by John Carver, Green Smith and Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, Scarlet Strike will be making her second start over the track where she is stabled. The daughter of Smart Strike and the French Deputy mare Scarlet Tango was third going five furlongs in her career debut June 9.

A $220,000 purchase in March at a Florida 2-year-old sale, Scarlet Strike has one win in four starts and has earned $112,240. Prior to chasing the then-undefeated Executiveprivilege in the Chandelier, the Kentucky bred defeated maidens by a half-length in her first start around two turns – as the 5-2 favorite Sept. 2 at Del Mar.

The most accomplished member of the Sharp Cat cast – in terms of wins – is Tilde.

A California bred daughter of Swiss Yodeler and the Cee’s Tizzy mare Self Taught, Tilde has won four of five and banked $332,560. The first of her victories came in her debut here May 20. The gray is owned and was co-bred by  trainer Mike Harrington.

Trainer Doug O’Neill will have two representatives – Renee’s Titan and Wittgenstein.

Owned by Zillah Reddam, Renee’s Titan has lost three in a row since taking her debut by 4 ¼ lengths over Cushion Track June 21. She was purchased privately by her current connections from owner John Liviakis after that win.

The Bernstein filly out of the Tiznow mare Titan Queen has banked $35,400.

An Irish bred daughter of Shamardal and the Definite Article mare La Vita E Bella, Wittgenstein comes off a maiden win on turf Oct. 20 at Santa Anita for Reddam Racing LLC. She has started six times and earned $28,955.

Midnight Ballet will be making her first appearance beyond six furlongs for Stoneway Farm LLC and trainer Tom Proctor. The Midnight Lute filly out of the Unbridled’s Song mare Buzz Song is 1-for-2 with earnings of $43,000. She won at first asking Aug. 11 at Del Mar before finishing fifth of six in a Santa Anita allowance Oct. 4.

Trained by Peter Miller for a partnership that includes Roncelli Family Trust, David Bernsen and Wire To Wire Stables, Rhodium graduated in her fifth career start when stretched to one mile Oct. 4 at Santa Anita. The daughter of Flashy Bull and the Swiss Yodeler mare Rockin On has earned $38,230.

Magestic Stinger steps into a stakes after knocking off $50,000 maidens in her second start Oct. 5 at Santa Anita. Sal Gonzalez trains the Majestic Warrior filly out of the Hennessy mare Starboard Stinger for Tricar Stable, Inc. She’s banked $24,600.

From inside out, the field for the seventh Sharp Cat Stakes: Scarlet Strike, Joe Talamo rides, 117 pounds; Magestic Stinger, Juan Hernandez, 115; Rhodium, Garrett Gomez, 117; Wittgenstein, Mario Gutierrez, 117; Midnight Ballet, Julien Leparoux, 117; Tilde, Rafael Bejarano, 123 and Renee’s Titan, Russell Baze, 117.
