Santa Anita Releases Summer Stakes Schedule

Santa Anita Park has announced its 2014 Summer Stakes schedule, which will begin April 25 and conclude June 29.  The 40-day meeting will offer horsemen a total of 34 added money races; 21 of them graded stakes that include six Grade I events.

Beginning opening day, Friday, April 25, with the Grade III, $100,000 Last Tycoon Stakes, for 3-year-olds and up at 1 1/8 miles on turf, through closing day Sunday, June 29, with the Grade II, $200,000 San Juan Capistrano Stakes for 3-year-olds and up at 1 ¾ miles on turf, Santa Anita will offer a full complement of stakes for horses in all categories.

All six Grade I stakes:  the Gamely Stakes on May 26, the American Oaks May 31, the Vanity Stakes June 14, the Shoemaker Mile on June 14, the Triple Bend Stakes June 28 and The Gold Cup at Santa Anita on June 28, were previously run at Hollywood Park, which closed on Dec. 22.

“With the closing of Hollywood Park, we’re obviously entering into a new frontier here in Southern California,” said Tom Ludt, Senior Vice President, Racing & Gaming for the Stronach Group.  “We have incorporated a good many of the longstanding, successful stakes that had been offered at Hollywood and added several of our own for what we think is a very comprehensive stakes schedule that will provide owners and horsemen many opportunities routing and sprinting, on both turf and dirt.

“Our Grade I stakes speak for themselves and we think it’s going to be a great way to end our meet with races like the Gold Cup and the San Juan Capistrano on June 28 and 29.  With our expanded dates schedule and the Breeders’ Cup coming here for an unprecedented third consecutive year this fall, this is an exciting time in racing and Santa Anita Park is proud to be leading the way.”
