Santa Anita Park Launches SA Derby Contest

Santa Anita Park has announced that it will conduct its first-ever Santa Anita Derby Millionaire Contest in conjunction with Saturday’s Grade I, $1 million Santa Anita Derby.  One lucky fan will be selected prior to the Derby and Santa Anita will place a $5,000 win bet on the horse he or she has selected.  Should that horse win, the money, including the $5,000 bet, will go to the winner and should that horse win the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes, a $1 million grand prize will be awarded.

All fans attending on-track Saturday will be encouraged to fill out an entry card with the horse they have selected to win the Derby.  All contest entry cards must be submitted before 2 p.m.  Ten names will then be randomly drawn and the list of finalists will be announced and shown on broadcast monitors throughout the track.

The 10 finalists must check-in with contest officials in the East Paddock Gardens prior to 3 p.m.  The individual fan that checks in and is highest on the list of finalists (based upon the order in which the names are pulled from the contest bin), will be chosen to participate as a potential Santa Anita Derby Millionaire.

“We wanted to create a contest that gives one fan a chance to win a million dollars and it’s perfect timing with the Santa Anita Derby purse increasing to $1 million this year,” said said Nate Newby, Santa Anita Vice President of Marketing.  “There are obviously going to be a lot of people selecting California Chrome and Candy Boy, but no matter who wins here on Saturday, we’ll all be rooting for the horse to win the Triple Crown.  It should be a lot of fun.”

First post time on Derby Day is at 12 noon.  Admission gates open at 10 a.m.  For additional information on the Santa Anita Derby and the Santa Anita Derby 5k Run & Walk which begins at 7 a.m. Saturday, please visit santaanita.com or call (626) 574-RACE.
