Richard's Kid Returns to Del Mar

Two-time TVG Pacific Classic winner Richard’s Kid is scheduled to make his first Del Mar start in nearly two years in the Grade III, $100,000 Cougar II Handicap on Friday (July 26).

A field of six was entered for the 1 ½-mile marathon on the Polytrack main racing surface.

The Cougar II, being contested for the 62nd time, was trainer Bob Baffert’s choice of races for Richard’s Kid as a preparation for the Pacific Classic in both 2009 and 2010 and it proved to be the winning strategy both times.

Richard’s Kid finished second to Unusual Suspect in the 2009 Cougar II before posting a $50.80 upset win in the Pacific Classic under Mike Smith for owner Arnold Zetcher. In 2010, a third-place finish in the Cougar II preceded an $11.60 score in the Classic under Smith for new owner Zabeel International Racing Corp.

The 2010 Classic was the last Del Mar appearance for Richard’s Kid. The 7-year-old son of Lemon Drop Kid spent all of 2011 based in the United Arab Emirates. In the most recent of two 2012 starts, both at Hollywood Park, Richard’s Kid was second to stablemate Game On Dude in the $750,000, Grade I Hollywood Gold Cup on July 7.

The field for the Cougar II from the rail out, with jockeys and weights, is: Richard‘s Kid (Rafael Bejarano, 123); Romp (Martin Garcia, 114); Worth Repeating (Mike Smith, 115); Dynamic Host (David Flores, 120); Balladry (Joe Talamo, 115); Fly Lexis Fly (Garrett Gomez, 113).
