Remember This Race?

Race Clue #1 - Despite two scratches, this edition of a historic mid-season race was contested by a full field.

Race Clue #2 - The winner of the race was an Eclipse Award winner more than once.

Race Clue #3- Among those defeated were both a former and a future Breeders’ Cup winner.

Race Clue #4 - The race favorite could manage no better than 9th, but the second choice got the job done.

Race Clue #5 - The race winner would run well in a losing effort in the Breeders’ Cup Classic later the same year.

Race Clue #6- 12th early, the eventual winner uncorked a furious stretch rally to win going away.

Race Clue #7- The race’s third choice was in the previous year’s Kentucky Derby, and ran in the same Breeders’ Cup race three times.

Race Clue #8 - For the winner, it was the second of four consecutive grade 1 stakes wins.

Race Clue #9 - The victorious trainer will be a part of this Saturday’s big race at Belmont.

Race Clue #10 - The race winner would try this race two more times, never winning again, but finishing in the money both times.

You should know it by now … Tell me the race and the year!
