Remember This Race?

Race Clue #1 - A full field of 12 lined up for this rich race which was first contested in 1984.

Race Clue #2 - The bettor’s top choice would run a solid race, albeit a losing one, while the winner was let go at double digit odds.

Race Clue #3- Among those defeated were the horses who had run 1-2 in this race the year before.

Race Clue #4 - The race winner employed a new running style, loitering near the back of the pack for much of the race.

Race Clue #5- As for the runner-up, it marked the second consecutive tough defeat in the World Championships.

Race Clue #6 - The top two carried less weight on their backs than every other horse in the field.

Race Clue #7 - For the winner, it capped a season with a winning percentage of 75%.

Race Clue #8- One third of the field was coming in off the same race at Belmont Park. In this one they would finish 6-7-8-9 respectively.

Race Clue #9 - It was not the first victory in this race for either the winning trainer or winning jockey.

Race Clue #10 - The top two would go at again the following summer with the world watching.

You should know it by now … Tell me the race and the year!

He's too good ladies and gentlemen, too good!
The key was "another tough beat in the World Championships." Since you didn't say race that meant that it was in two different races. The fact that the top two carried less weight meant it had to either be age or sex allowance or both. And let's face it, we were all watching Royal Ascot today....
Chris got me by three minutes! Well-played, sir!
