Queen's Award Stuns Franklin County Foes

keeneland start
Coudelaria Jessica Inc.’s Queen’s Award collared defending champion Madame Giry in deep stretch to win the 17th running of the $100,000 Buffalo Trace Franklin County by a half-length before 22,807 fans, which marked a record attendance for a Friday during a Keeneland fall meet.

The previous attendance mark for a Friday during the fall meet was 22,052 on Oct. 10, 2008.

Trained by Eduardo Caramori and ridden by Kent Desormeaux, Queen’s Award was last in the field of 10 in the run down the backstretch as Bounding Bi raced through the first quarter of a mile in :21.23.

Approaching the far turn, Desormeaux shifted Queen’s Award off the rail and began to move between horses. In the stretch, Queen’s Award swung to the far outside and gradually wore down Madame Giry, who had taken the lead from Sweet Cassiopeia at the sixteenth pole, to complete the 5½ furlongs on a firm turf course in 1:03.12.

A 6-year-old Kentucky-bred daughter of Medaglia d’Oro out of the Williamstown mare Town Queen, Queen’s Award is consigned to the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale as a racing or broodmare prospect. Friday’s $60,000 check increased Queen’s Award’s earnings to $233,344 with a record of 27-5-4-5.

Queen’s Award, the second-longest shot in the field, returned $63.80, $20.20 and $10.20. Madame Giry, ridden by Eddie Castro, returned $6.40 and $4.20 with Sweet Cassiopeia finishing third a half-length back under Joe Rocco Jr. and returning $4.20 to show.

Favored Silverette was a neck back in fourth and was followed in order by Magical Moon, Making Waves, Bounding Bi, Dene Court, Trippin’ Along and Lignite.
