Purim’s Dancer Prevails at Santa Anita

Under a confident ride from Gary Stevens, course specialist  Purim’s Dancer prevailed by a half-length in Santa Anita’s second race Friday, a $58,000 allowance for fillies and mares at 6 ½ furlongs down the Camino Real Turf Course, covering the distance in 1:12.02 while notching her fourth win from five tries down the hill.

Off as the 4-5 in a field of five distaffers aged three and up, Purim’s Dancer made an easy lead  out of the gate and was then content to sit second to longshot Magical Band and Victor Espinoza as the field approached the main track crossing at the top of the stretch.

“It was a nice ride,” said Stevens, who is now two for three on the Tom Proctor trainee.  “On paper, there was no pace at all.  This filly wants to run about an eighth of a mile, the last eighth.  The first quarter of a mile, we were just galloping then I went right after Victor earlier than I wanted to but it worked out all right.  She’s a nice filly and she loves the hill.” 

Owned by Donnelly, Johnsen, Kohn and McLean, Purim’s Dancer paid $3.80, $2.60 and $2.10, and will be pointed to the Grade III Sen. Ken Maddy Stakes down the hill on Nov. 2, according to Proctor.

A 4-year-old Kentucky-bred filly by the Dynaformer stallion Purim, Purim’s Dancer collected $34,800 for the win, boosting her earnings to $181,200.  Her overall mark now stands at 10-5-1-2.

A Time to Love, who sat third for most of the trip with Chantal Sutherland-Kruse up, was off at 6-1 and paid $4.60 and $2.80.

Minds Eyes, next to last at the top of the stretch with Rafael Bejarano, rallied stoutly between horses late and just missed the place while finishing a neck in front of Magical Band and Victor Espinoza.

The second choice at 3-1, Minds Eyes paid $2.20 to show.

Splits on the race, a third condition allowance run as Friday’s second race, were 22.52, 44.89 and 1:06.30.
