Well, after Orb’s breezed 4 furlongs in 47 1/5 seconds over a fast Belmont dirt surface, that big gust of wind from the north was Shug exhaling in relief.
In an interview shortly after that workout, the trainer used phrases like, “I’m on Cloud 9”, “sent chills up my spine” and “I thought it was breathtaking” in describing what he had just witnessed from his Kentucky Derby winner.
Approximately 9 hours after uttering such thoughts, I caught up with Shug shortly after Orb arrived at Pimlico Race Course.
With the likes of Goldencents, Itsmyluckyday, Oxbow and Governor Charlie in the Preakness field, it seems likely that Shug will get that perfect scenario, a brisk early pace for Orb to run down the front runners in the stretch at Old Hilltop.
If Orb can capture the second jewel of racings’ Triple Crown, then it’ll be back home to New York and the entire sports world will be asking once again, “Is THIS the year the Triple Crown drought ends?!”
