Preakness 2013 - It should set up well for Orb once again

The latest horse to be added to the Preakness 2013 field is Titletown Five from the D. Wayne Lukas barn, and although I cannot recommend his chances on May 18, his addition further shapes the way the race will be run in 11 days.

It seems the connections of speed horses are not walking, but running to get a chance to challenge Orb at 1 3/16 miles in the Preakness. I’m not sure I understand why. Yes, I know racing’s Middle Jewel is the shortest of the three legs of the Triple Crown, but at 9 ½ furlongs, it is anything but a sprint. Yes, I know Pimlico does not have the sweeping turns of Belmont, but if you think the Preakness is a race routinely wired, think again.

It’s one thing if a quality speed horse is likely to be alone on the front, but with speed types Goldencents, Oxbow, Itsmyluckyday, Govenor Charlie, and Titletown Five all likely to be in the Preakness field, the early pace figures to hot and nasty.

What does all this mean for the Kentucky Derby winner’s chance at Pimlico? Let’s just say the rich should get richer. Much like this year’s Derby, fast paces seldom bode well for the horses on or near the early lead in good sized fields running classic distances. Much like the Derby, this year’s Preakness is looking like a race that will set up kindly for horses who can relax early and come running late. And you all know how that turned out for Orb at Churchill Downs.

Maybe if Normandy Invasion can wait a little longer to make his move, or maybe if Mylute can get the jump on Orb. Maybe if Departing has truly become this good, or maybe if Will Take Charge has a trouble free trip, things will be different in Louisville.

But you know what? Orb doesn’t need any maybes. He’s the best horse going in, and with today’s addition of the speedy Titletown Five, a repeat of the result in the Kentucky Derby in 11 days seems more likely than ever. It seems almost inevitable.

I like Orb, picked him to win the Derby and would love to see him win the Triple Crown... But let's face it... It takes a lot of talent and a little good luck to accomplish an obviously awesome feat... And jmac you are right ... teh excuses will be flying everywhere just like after the Derby for everyone who lost... It's horse racing and human nature...
I was very impressed with the way Orb ran in the slop. Last year I was certain I'll Have Another wouldn't win the Triple, and unfortunately I was right. I would love to see a Triple Crown this year, but a lot can still happen, not all of it good. Stuart Janney Jr. (Orb's co-owner) knows all about that. He still remembers the heartbreak his family experienced when Ruffian broke down.
Also the Phipps family are ones who lost Secretariat in a coin toss and are with their cousins the Janneys, the owners of Orb.
I also feel, the Preakness should have been the race Palace Malice would win....but....he is tired after the hard schedule he kept, so he would be eligible for the Derby. Now, he is too tired & worn out to run in the Preakness.
I believe we will see a Triple Crown Winner this year !! That would be AWESOME, since this is the 40th Anniversary of Secretariat's Triple Crown & Secretariat is in Orb's pedigree on his sire side.
Here this isn't that hard. Trifecta, Orb wt Departing, Will take charge, wt Departing, Will Take Charge = $60 worth of entertainment
The preakness is a race at a bastard distance that usually sets up well for the KD winner, no matter the name of the horse or year. Goldencents and Oxbow can't rate= fast pace=Orb. This is horse race, if the favorite doesn't win it's normal, not abnormal.
But even if I say it, everyone will say oh you just hate hors racing.
EVERYONE KNEW that the Brown OUt, Native Dancer, Bid .......any number of sure things like Swale etc were going to just coast home, BUT somehow did not.
I agree, jmac500. I've seen this over the top euphoria too many times, don't want to be a downer but he has two legs to go and it would be extremely unlikely to think the other two legs are going to set up for him like the KD did.
I love Orb but I see the same pattern everytime a horse wins the Derby impressively. There is no way he's comparable to any of the horse that have won the Triple Crown or horsethat have won 2 legs of it. I also guarentee if he losses people will say its a fluke that he lost and all this other crap. You can dislike me for saying this but it's fact.
I love the last line. Orb is the best horse to have won the derby in years. And he keeps getting better and better. Can't wait to hear the announcer yell ORRRRRBBBB!!!! two more times for the crown!
It would be nice if it were that simple wouldn't it? There are no sure things in horse racing friend.
Goldencents+Itsmyluckyday+Titletown Five+Governor Charlie+OXBOW= Orb wins Preakness.
Goldencents + Itsmyluckyday + Titletown Five + Governor Charlie = Orb wins Preakness
Love it, OTG!
IF Orb wins the Preakness(I feel he will) Could you imagine the build up to the Belmont?. Just imagine Orb taking the lead in the stretch opening up and striding past the rest place of Ruffian and crossing the wire in the Janney colors.....Good luck to Orb in the preakness!
Right on
Sorry about that Jay... I did sound a little mean-spirited there... not intended though... WTC has one graded stakes win at 28-1 and finished out of the money (6th, 8th) in the other two... So the handicapper in me doesn't like him in comparison with the rest of the field... He was running well in the Derby until he checked but we will never know how much that really influenced his finish... He will get a lot of betting money because of it though... If he wins, I will be the first one to congratulate, I promise...
He would have definitely gotten a better placing than 8th
