The second showing of “Luck” airs on HBO tonight at 9 p.m. Filmed in large part at Santa Anita, the racing-themed series has received favorable reviews such as the following that appeared in Parade Magazine on Jan. 29:

“Deadwood creator David Milch and director Michael Mann team up for a fascinating series about strivers, power brokers, and sad sacks who convene at the Santa Anita race track. With a language all its owns and racing photography so thrilling you’ll be itching to place a bet yourself, this drama’s a sure thing. Dustin Hoffman and Nick Nolte lead the splendid cast.”

Viewer response to “Luck” has been so favorable that HBO has announced renewal of the series for a second season.

What the Nation is saying about Positive Reviews Continue for HBO's Luck...

I "sat" in on the LuckChat last night--really enjoyable actually with s few of the actors chiming in and folks connected to the show.
icy, I get the impression that this vehicle is to garner support from a new crow, Of course the seasoned experts will realize it is full or inaccuracies
I would much rather watch an hour of real horse racing than an hour watching this show...however, Gary Stevens does a good job and I can actually understand what he is saying
I don't understand how you have two actors of the stature Dustin Hoffman and Nick Nolte and not give them a script. Have all the screenwriters died also that they can't do better than this. I'm not joking, these are two of the finest actors ever and to give them nothing to work with is just not right. As far a racing goes it gives very little information to anyone new to thesport to interest them. I'm not trying to be pessimistic but I am terribly disappointed. Maybe I can't handicap a race very well but a T.V. series I can handle. Instead of luck they should have called it Sham. Goodnight everyone sleep sound.
If you don't like Luck, that's your choice to miss out, but it has romance, stated that way so this is not censored, camaraderie, an inside view of the goings-on of the back side, gambling, mystery. We get to follow the progress of a Derby hopeful. There are at least a couple of ladies or men who might make a to do list. Hope that's not deleted. There's a LuckChat on Twitter for new fans who don't understand the terminology or viewers who want to discuss that week's episode. On Monday nights. I'm going to check that out, although I'm not one to tweet.
Russell: Well, why am I watching it? George: Because it's on TV. Russell: (pausing) Not yet.
@tim: LOL! you set the bar very low when you justify the show simply by saying "Its on TV". Sorry, but I expect quality acting and stories if I'm going to spend an hour of my time in front of the TV. Your comment reminds me of the classic Seinfeld in the episode "The Pitch" when Jerry and George are trying to convince the network execs to pick up their idea for a new sitcom: Russell: Well, why am I watching it?
Why would it not bring more interst? Its on TV and it centers around Horse racing? I was looking in STAR magazine and the reviewed LUCK so your saying that this show wont invite new fans?
My biggest complaint is that I find the characters hard to understand. It's like their talking with marbles in their mouths.....
You have two of the best actors of all time and a plot, if there is one that is unfolding at about the pace of the last BCC. I'm sure they'll give themselves some kind of award though, what are they called Tony's, Academy's, whatever says a bad show is good. I like HBO but not that series. Spent two shows hinting at a con game about to take place, just awful. What a waste of talent! That is not going to bring anyone into racing. Spot on Cugel.
cugel WTF man. Seems like most are loving LUCK . A horse racing TV show that is pretty good. Just brings more fans and interest to our sport
It's very boring. Amazing how they were able to combine the greatest sport in the world and one of the most beautiful tracks in the world into a dud. Dustin Hoffman is an embarassment. He reminds of William Shatner in the Priceline commercials. Way over the top acting and an unbelievable character. The others are just boring. If you have HBO, much better time wasters are Boardwalk Empire, Game Of Thrones, and Spartacus.
ls, No cheesecake. Bring meat for cujo if you stop by. Meanwhile, sign up for HBO. Totally worth it for Luck.
Mary could we have a Luck Party and all come to your house to watch it? Then I don't have to wait until the DVD comes out, I'll bring a cheesecake... ;-)
Far from boring. The many story lines and characters from all walks of life are captivating. Click like if you think Luck shows the sport as sexy and exciting, which it is.
I'd rather spend my money on wagering than paying for HBO, guess I'll have to wait for the DVD?
I think it is boring...
