Poker Player Tunes Up for BC Juvenile Turf

Gary and Mary West’s Poker Player, winner of the Bourbon (G3) here on Oct. 6 and pre-entered in the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) on Nov. 1, worked six furlongs on a turf course labeled firm in 1:15.80 Thursday morning with jockey Channing Hill up.

Working on his own and well off the inner rail, Poker Player broke off at the 5½-furlong pole and continued a sixteenth of a mile past the finish line in fractions of :13, :26.80, :39.60 and :53.40.

“He galloped well over it the other day and he finished good today,” trainer Wayne Catalano said of Poker Player’s Tuesday morning activity on the turf course in advance of the work. “A 2-year-old, out there by himself for the first time can get lost out there and that is why I took him out there the other day, to get him used to it.”

Poker Player is scheduled to ship to Santa Anita on Sunday.
