Trilogy Stable and Laurie Plesa’s 3-year-old Itsmyluckyday breezed an
easy mile in 1:46 flat Saturday morning at Calder for trainer Eddie
Plesa, Jr. as he continues preparation for a start next as one of the
favorites in the $1 million Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream Park on
Sat., Mar. 30.
“He went perfect,” said Plesa, who also had several other stable
starts on the work tab at Calder Saturday morning. “It (mile work) lets
him stretch his legs and he gets a little more out of going longer. He’s
been right on schedule since the Holy Bull.”
A son of Lawyer Ron purchased for $110,000 at the OBS March
2-year-old sales, Itsmyluckyday won the $400,000 Holy Bull Stakes (G3)
last out on Jan. 26 by two lengths over previously undefeated 2012
Eclipse champion 2-year-old Shanghai Bobby, who is training up to a
rematch in the Florida Derby for trainer Todd Pletcher at Palm Meadows.
Plesa also has Hardaway Stables’ 3-year-old Speak Logistics as a
potential Kentucky Derby (G1) prospect and he breezed a half-mile in 49
2/5 Saturday morning in preparation for his next start. “He also
finished really well,” said Plesa. “We’re going to take him to New York
and give him a chance in the Wood Memorial.”
Speak Logistics is a son of High Cotton purchased for $62,000 at the
OBS April 2-year-old sales and finished third last out in the $400,000
Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) here on Feb. 23, beaten seven lengths by
Orb following a troubled fourth-place effort in the Sam Davis Stakes
(G3) at Tampa Bay Downs on Feb. 2 in his 3-year-old debut. The $1
million Wood Memorial (G1) will be run on Sat., Apr. 6 at Aqueduct.
Yet another accomplished 3-year-old trained by Plesa posting a
workout Saturday morning was David Melin and Laurie Plesa’s Brave Dave,
who breezed an easy three furlongs in 38 1/5, his first recorded workout
since a disappointing sixth-place finish behind Merit Man in the
$100,000 Spectacular Bid Stakes at six furlongs on New Year’s Day.
“He was simply tired after that race.” said Plesa. “He had been
running steadily up to that point and just needed a break, but it's time
to start back with him now.” A son of Put It Back, Brave Dave had won
four of six previous starts with one second before the Spectacular Bid
Stakes. Three of his victories came in stakes events beginning with the
Sapling Stakes (G3) last summer at Monmouth Park.
Plesa also had Live Oak Plantation’s 6-year-old Florida homebred
mare Successful Song working Saturday morning with a half-mile in 49 4/5
as she prepares for her next start in the $150,000 Rampart Stakes (G3)
to be run at 1 1/8 miles, one of six stakes to be run on Florida Derby
Day undercard.
A daughter of Successful Appeal, Successful Song will be bidding for
her third stakes victory of the meet following a half-length score over
Golden Mystery in the $100,000 Ocala Stakes going a mile on Dec. 30 and
very a impressive 3 ¼ lengths romp in the $300,000 Sunshine Millions
Distaff at 1 1/8 miles last out on Jan. 19.
Dullahan, Little Mike Unplaced at Meydan
Graded staked winners Little Mike and Dullahan, both stabled at
Gulfstream this winter for trainer Dale Romans, were unplaced in races
in Dubai Saturday evening.
Arlington Million (G1) and Breeders' Cup Turf (G1) winner Little
Mike held a short lead into the stretch in the $400,000 Maktoum
Challenge before finishing eighth while Dullahan, who broke slowly under
jockey Kieren Fallon, finished 11th of 14 in the $200,000 Burj Nahar.
Both are scheduled to race March 30 on Dubai World Cup day.
