Pleasant Prince Works for Blue Grass

Ken and Sarah Ramsey aren’t sure Pleasant Prince has enough graded-stakes earnings to make the field for the May 1 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), so they plan to race the colt in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I) at Keeneland April 10. Read More

What the Nation is saying about Pleasant Prince Works for Blue Grass...

The Derby earnings system if flawed, for sure. Make your bets, 2010 will be the last year for this crappy system. Humphrey, yes, the race is irrelevant. But, these horses are not. In a Derby filled with speed, don't count Interactif, Aikenite, Make Music for Me or Pleasant Prince out of it.
There's no doubt that Victor Espinoza caused Lookin At Lucky some traffic problems in the Santa Anita Derby. But frankly, Gomez was riding Lucky that effective in the race anyway, before the issues with Victor's horse. That was as poor of a ride as I've ever seen Garrett Gomez give a horse with as much potential as LAL has. Victor Espinoza isn't at fault for how LAL was ridden the entire race. JMO.
The irrelevnt race at the irrelevent track needs its own stage now.
Absolutely, rsuper. Flawed system, but the nagging excuse, "Which is better?" Umm, almost anything.
Graded Earnings no longer put the best horses into the derby. Trainers get 2 YO in with large purses and grade 3's have huge purses. A Grade one race should count 100% of the purse towards the Derby, a grade 2 possible 75%, and a grade 3 50%. 2 YO graded monies should be little, somewhere around 25%. Thats why horses are able to avoid the best and still make the Derby. Make them challenge each other. With the need to have almost 250K to make the field is turning this process into a circus.
