Live Maryland racing switches to historic Pimlico Race Course on Thursday, April 3rd for a 35-Day Spring Meet highlighted by the 139th running of the $1.5 million Preakness® Stakes on May 17, 2014.

Live racing is scheduled to take place four days a week, Thursday through Sunday prior to Preakness and then Friday, Saturday and Sunday (plus Memorial Day). The meet will end on June 7, Belmont Stakes Day.

The marquee meet of the Maryland racing season will feature 25 stakes races for purses totaling $4,680,000. More importantly to the horseplayer will be the potential of full fields thanks to more than 40 turf races written in the Condition Book 1, which only covers the first 15 racing days. Expect even more for the other 20 days.

The Maryland Jockey Club (MJC) hopes that the 10 cent Jackpot Pick 5 will entice horseplayers to pay more attention to all races conducted at Pimlico as they have in playing the Rainbow Pick 6 at Gulfstream Park.

The Opening Day card features nine races, including the first two turf races of 2014 in Maryland along with FREE admission and FREE live racing program. First post is 1:10 p.m. EDT.

For every live racing day at Pimlico, I will post a blog to share my “opinions” for that days card, as well as information on Preakness runners, trainers, jocks, etc. after we find out who wins the 140th running of the Kentucky Derby.

Recapping previous blog posted selections at Laurel Park from Saturday, March 29th (Closing Day) had 7 winners from 10 races (4 Top Selections; payoffs in BOLD) having $2 WIN pay-offs of $2.40 (1st race), $5.60 (2nd), $7.80 (4th), $5.20 (5th), $32.20 (7th), $4.40 (8th) and $9.60 (10th).

The BEST BET of the Day (10: 2-3-3) Aunt Ellipsis (9thd race: 5-1 M/L; 3-1 PT) bobbled leaving the starting gate, circled the turn four deep and finished willingly but only good enough for third, returning $2.60 to SHOW.

The LONGSHOT PICK (11: 3-5-0) Bluebrass Belle (6th race: 12-1 M/L; 5-1 PT) cleared early and set a slow pace in about the five path, dropped in a bit into the turn, was joined from her inside past the three eighths pole, gave brief resistance then tired through the final quarter mile to finish fourth.

FYI – the BEST BET of the Day selection will never be a M/L favorite and the LONGSHOT PICK will simply be the runner having the highest M/L odds among my top picks for an entire card.

PLEASE NOTE: Statistics provided for the BEST BET and LONGSHOT PICK in parentheses represent the Number of Picks: Wins-Places-Shows. For example, the BEST BET (10: 1-2-3) was picked 10 times resulting in 1 winner, 2 places and 3 shows. In the past, I would reset these numbers at the start of each meet. For 2014, I reset these numbers on Jan. 1st in order to chart results on a yearly basis.

As an extension of my mission to promote Maryland racing beyond the borders of the Free State, I've decided to ride the Selfie wave of popularity. For each blog during the Pimlico meet, my mission is to provide exposure (or embarrassment) for willing jockeys, trainers, MJC staff and/or anyone who shares my passion for Maryland thoroughbred racing via Twitter with yours truly. Tweet yours while at Pimlico with #PimlicoSelfie.

Here's ol' GQ with Gabby Gaudet, MJC's Racing Analyst.

That's disappointing
Nooooooo..............
Makes it worse. Now there really is not a legitimate horse without a question mark to take a shot with. S.I &Samraat definately not worth the short odds they will go off at. Looks as though Uncle Sigh may present the only sensible value other than a healthy Noble Moon.
DRF is reporting that Kid Cruz is scratched. https://twitter.com/DRFGrening
Beatos home track is Aq. Flying not necessary only a bus pass. Exactly what we told Rudy in Carter, step on it. Now that the nonsense of 16 Million or 8 Million is out of the way.Would be nice to see a lifelong trooper like Manny get his first and also the owner. Stil up in the air with Moon.Heard he is looking great in the AM's and an Amigo who is very close with Leah says she will not run him unless 110 % fit. I believe that, but bar shoe has me thinking. If race were rooting for a trainer and owner. Samraat would be the pick here. I know the owners and Violette trained past NY Stae Bred hero >> Little Wizard who we had a piece of. Cruz is very much the Wise Guy horse. Betting value is going down and down. No real juicy angle to bet the race with. After being involved in a different way last year, race is sadly becoming Boring. Yes Vic,just like i find tours through the Breeding farms boring, i find this race is getting boring.
Wouldn’t that be something if Dads could sneak away from a field like this. Rudy should have flown in I Beato :D >> I’m glad Ron didn’t sell SI out from under Manny Azupura {yet}. Manny’s still looking for his 1st G1 win after all these years. Didn’t he run one in the KD 40 years ago? Kid Cruz appears to be the wise guy colt, Nathan. Noble Moon adds to the fun.
After Rudolfo explained the situation better,he was convincing.Thankfully he improved in the picture painting dept. Rudolfo and Ionel are on fire as a team ,they are 5 for 9. But honestly, you and i could of ridden him yesterday if we did not fall off the horse.I'll have mine Well Done ; D. So happy that the boys at The Sleezy made Wood Day decision for us. They are sold out in the dining area. At least they did something good, now will fall into the No-Shows.Rudy looks to be absolute loose speed in Carter. Told him to send bottle of wine to track supe today.Enclose a cement slab in the package ,just in case he does not get the picture for Saturday races.
…and you were ready to drop him to 35 like a hot potato. The question is, does Inoel keep the mount :D _ Give him a carrot and look for a little steak at the beach.
Thanks Anne, like i said he impressed me to no end. This guy has 3 wins since Rudy took over. Would not mind taking some shots at Monmouth or Delaware this summer. Unless you put him against claimers,Belmont could be tough to find the right spot.
Didn't realize his race was today. Congratulations to him and to you!
Nathan, the Don even knocked me for a loop. I did not think he would lose in his spot. But the way he won was very impressive. Feet are improving and so is the horse. Looks like this will be a very fun spring coming up. Vyjack is chomping to race and The Don is doing his thing.
Jocko is truly the best.he just throws them out running. Praetero is running in his 3rd race in the last 17 days. One was in NY and the other in Baltimore. Seriously doubt he will run here. Even The great Jocko has his limitations and morals. The Don is doing very good. Potential wet surface will be a quetion mark.
  • marylandgq · Track will be FAST... 20% chance of showers AFTER 9th race. Turf is still too soft. Pick the MUDDERS for Friday though. · 115 days ago

Hope I Beato Jocko >> Good Luck
Nathan the Star of the meet Don Tito will be running in todays opening card(D)
Terrific stuff, GQ!
that is TOO much running on a surface not designed for that much traffic at once.
All ways the gentleman, Gary Quill cashes many tickets too. Be sure to follow him to the Derby as well as being Maryland's own GQ.

Great picture with Gabby. Have an awesome Pimlico meeting! Monmouth tried the jackpot bet last summer and it did not grab hold like at Gulfstream.
