Pender Has Winning Pair in Tasty Treat & Jeranimo

Tasty Treat, wire-to-wire winner of Friday’s $90,000 Daisycutter Handicap, and Eddie Read Stakes winner Jeranimo have adjoining stalls in trainer Mike Pender’s Hollywood Park barn.

The 4-year-old filly and 7-year-old horse sometimes exchange glances over the webbing, Pender said, and the stable crew can’t suppress fanciful thoughts of a “date with destiny” for the two in the breeding shed someday. Until then, of course, they make one heck of a 1-2 punch on the track.

Tasty Treat’s Daisycutter win increased her career record to three-for-three on the Del Mar turf and her seventh win in 17 career starts increased her earnings to more than $300,000.

“She’s got the quickest first five steps out of the gate of any horse and Rafael (Bejarano) did a good of getting her clear and getting her home,” Pender said.

Jeranimo, headed to the Pacific Classic, will train at Hollywood Park until a few days before the race on Sunday, August 25, Pender said.

Lady Of Shamrock Seeks To Regain Winning Ways

Lady of Shamrock is 0-for-5 since her victory nearly a year ago in the Del Mar Oaks which secured top 3-year-old filly honors for the 2012 meeting. But the connections for the now 4-year-old daughter of Scat Daddy hope a return to the same Jimmy Durante Turf Course and 1 1/8 mile distance in Sunday’s $250,000 Grade II John C. Mabee will also bring about a return to the winner’s circle.

In the past year Lady of Shamrock has run in five Grade I or Grade II stakes, recording three second-place finishes, one third and only one off-the-board result. Her last start was a second in the Grade II New York Handicap on June 29 at Belmont Park.

“The difference in Lady of Shamrock is that she’s had no pace to run at in every race she’s run this year,” Sadler said. “She comes from way back and she needs to have some pace up front to set her up. Unfortunately, this looks like another paceless race.

“But she has run well down here and that was a very good second in the New York Handicap.”

Tiz Flirtatious, the 7-5 morning line favorite for the Mabee, has finished ahead of Lady of Shamrock, the 8-5 second choice, in two 2013 matchups. The most recent was the Grade I Gamely at Hollywood Park on May 27 which was the last race for Tiz Flirtatious.

Marketing Mix won the Gamely by a head over Tiz Flirtatious with Lady of Shamrock four lengths behind. Marketing Mix has been training at Del Mar but will ship to Chicago on Monday for next weekend’s Beverly D Stakes at Arlington Park.

“The Marketing Mix, Tiz Flirtatious and Lady Shamrock form is very solid, so we’ll see what happens.” Sadler said.
