Obviously Barely Holds Off Mr. Commons

Del Mar logo
Irish-bred Obviously, the even-money favorite under hot riding Joe Talamo, held on – barely – in a desperate finish to nose out rallying Mr. Commons to win the Grade II $200,000 Del Mar Mile in course record time of 1:32.10 Sunday.

Obviously was comfortably in front from the start of the once-around event over the infield Jimmy Durante Turf Course, but was all out to ward off the flying finish of Mr. Commons, who charged from last place under Brice Blanc to just miss. It marked the second straight year that an unlucky Mr. Commons was beaten a nose in the Del Mar Mile. Last year, it was Caracortado who defeated him.

Jeranimo, the 123-pound highweight, was third, almost five lengths behind the top two and a length in front of Norvsky in the field of six.

Obviously, owned by Californians Anthony Fanticola of Newport Coast and Joseph Scardino of Glendora,  and trained by Mike Mitchell,  threatened the course record in his first start at Del Mar this summer when he ran a mile in 1:32.41. The record of 1:32.21 that he broke Sunday was set by Three Valleys in 2005.

Obviously, a son of Choisir who carried 118 pounds Sunday,  returned $4.20, $3.40 and $2.40 while earning $120,000 with his fifth win in ten starts. His lifetime earnings are $270,361.

Mr. Commons paid $4.40 and $2.80, while Jeranimo returned $2.40 to show.
