August 28 2010. Richard's Kid and Mike Smith win 20th running of the Pacific Classic(GI) at Del Mar Race Track in Del Mar CA. Richard’s Kid, the winner of the Pacific Classic and Goodwood Stakes in his last two starts, will not start in the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at Churchill Downs on Nov. 6, and he will be sent to Dubai for racing this winter, trainer Bob Baffert said on Tuesday.

Baffert worked Richard’s Kid six furlongs in 1:13 at Hollywood Park on Tuesday morning, preparing him for a start in the BC Classic. Later that morning, he was informed by representatives of owner Sheikh Rashid bin Mohammed al-Maktoum that the millionaire horse will not start in Kentucky next month.

“He wants him home,” Baffert said of Sheikh Rashid’s plan. “He wants to get him ready for the winter. I got the word today. He’s going to go into quarantine this week.”

Sheikh Rashid, 28, races as Zabeel Racing International and is the oldest son of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai who owns the powerful Godolphin Racing stable.

What the Nation is saying about No Breeders' Cup for Richard’s Kid...

Richard's Kid is really good form right now. Having won back to back G1 victories in the Pacific Classic and the Goodwood Stakes. That said, you can't really blame Bob Baffert for not wanting to race Richard's Kid on conventional dirt at Churchill Downs. Richard's Kid has only two lifetime starts on the surface. Both of them in 2009. A well beaten 6th at the Louisiana Fair Grounds to Macho Again in the 2009 New Orleans Handicap. And a well beaten 4th behind No Advantage at Pimlico in the 2009 William Donald Schaeffer Stakes. Baffert has decided to go all or nothing with Lookin At Lucky in this year's Classic. Which I think is a smart move on his part. But Baffert was recently quoted at a luncheon with some members of the thoroughbred industry, the quote carried on DRF.com's web-site about a month ago. Baffert's quote: " Lookin At Lucky is the best colt I have to throw at Zenyatta on the dirt at Churchill Downs, and I'm not even sure he's good enough to beat her." Close quote.
