Name These Rivals!

Name These Rivals

Rival Clue #1 - Our rivalry may not have lasted long, but we packed plenty of action within five weeks.

Rival Clue #2 - One rival’s initial stakes attempt came in a six-length win at Hialeah in the same month that the other rival finished 3rd in the Spiral.

Rival Clue #3 - In our first meeting, we finished 1st and 5th. After that it was 1-2.

Rival Clue #4 - Our first meeting saw one rival coming off a stakes win at Gulfstream Park, while the other had just finished second in a New York-bred stakes.

Rival Clue #5 - It took the third try for the only rival to have been named champion to come out on top in our contests against each other.

Rival Clue #6 - One rival was a Kentucky homebred for one of American racing’s first families, the other was not.

Do you know who we are yet?

Rival Clue #7 - In our final meeting, we ran 1-2 at Belmont in a 12 furlong race, and it was not the Jockey Club Gold Cup.

Rival Clue #8 - All of our meetings came in Grade 1 races.

Rival Clue #9 - The Kentucky Derby was only for the more speedy of the two rivals, while the other did not run in the Triple Crown at all.

Rival Clue #10 - Both of our trainers were from Argentina, as was one of our owners.

Rival Clue #11 - One rival won a grade 1 stakes in their final career start, while the other won or placed in 15 stakes races.

Rival Clue #12 - Born the same year, one rival retired at three, the other at four.

Go ahead … Name us both!

Yea, Ernie!
Well done and well explained ... Congratulations, my friend!
You were kind to give a New York flavor. I followed that fast filly closely. I'm a huge fan of the Penna family, though not as much as a FB friend of mine, Steve Feldman, who had my dad as a teacher and loved those Penna charges, too. Steve especially loved Christmas Past, a bonafide monster. Steve and I also worked together at a newspaper back in the early 80s. Anyway, CJ famous fell apart in the manly heat of Louisiville, so that for me was a tip off - as was her Argentinian trainer. I knew the CCAO used to be (and still should be) 12F. I checked to see if she'd run in the Spiral--and honestly, remembered so after checking. I lucked into situations I was fairly close to. Woo hoo! Thought for sure Michael would beat me
I just remembered the time! Never would have gotten this.
How did you solve Christmas Past & Cupecoy's Joy, Big Ern?
ERNIE!!!!!!!!!!!!
