Musket Man wins the Illinois Derby 2009

Grade 2-winning millionaire MUSKET MAN (Yonaguska) has been retired and will stand at Vinery near Summerfield, Florida, this year for a $2,500 live foal fee.

A four-time stakes winner, Musket Man also placed eight black-type races, including five Grade 1 events, and earned $1,236,820 from a 16-6-3-5 line.

"Musket Man is an exciting addition to the Vinery Florida roster," Stallion Director Declan Doyle said. "As a Grade 2 winner and Grade 1-placed millionaire, he dodged no one at the racetrack while demonstrating the qualities and class breeders crave in a stallion. Local breeders will no doubt remember his stirring win in the Tampa Bay Derby (G3)."

Owned by Eric Fein and Vic Carlson and trained by Derek Ryan, Musket Man became a top contender for the 2009 Kentucky Derby (G1) with victories in the Illinois Derby (G2), Tampa Bay Derby and Pasco S. He was third in both the Derby and Preakness (G1), and recorded a pair of runner-up efforts in the Metropolitan H. (G1) and Carter H. (G1) as a four-year-old. He also captured the Super S. and finished third in the Whitney H. (G1) last season, and concluded his racing career with an eighth in the November 27 Cigar Mile H. (G1) at Aqueduct.

never fall in love with a horse with your money but by all means give your heart.
"never fall in love with a horse"? i guess your advice applies to everyone else but you. you get a boner every time you gush over big red.
words of wisdom from an old handicapper: Never fall in love with a horse as it clouds your objectivity
Imagine, you grow up 5 minutes from Belmont park, used to cut school to make the early double, and dreamed of owning arace horse, let alone a great race horse!. This was Musket Man!! Even though was not the owner and have no stake in him,he was my great race horse! It turns out a couple of friends of mine got together and bought a horse named Rouge Agent weho went on to make them a few dollars. after sell him Eric Fein bought MM and the rest is history! I have talked up a storm on HRN about MM and I dont regret it! Musket Man odviously was a news worthy race horse.Just the fact that HRN has reported his retirement! I just wish He had That Grade 1 under his belt. Good luck Eric and thank you so much for the Dreams and the Ride!!!!
