With the announcement by trainer Derek Ryan that Musket Man will run in the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic Nov. 6 at Churchill Downs, it may cause some to wonder exactly what the conditioner is attempting to accomplish.

After all, the 1-1/4 Classic is expected to feature the undefeated mare Zenyatta; Quality Road, who out finished Musket Man to win the grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap in July and again in August while running second to Musket Man’s third in the Whitney Handicap at Saratoga. And don’t forget that Blame, the winner of the Whitney and second in the Jockey Club Gold Cup, is also headed to Churchill Downs for the Classic as is Jockey Club Gold Cup winner Haynesfield. Representing the best of the 3-year-old crop this year, Preakness, Haskell, and Indiana Derby winner Lookin at Lucky also appears headed to the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

What the Nation is saying about Musket Man May Have A Shot At Classic Victory...

If MM stays off the pace in the Classic I guarentee He will be right there at the finish line!!
Musket Man is a nice steady working man's horse but I keep hearing that same thing, he set the Whitney up compromisising his chance. The fractions for the whitney were 24.42, 48.06 and 1:11.92, in other words a walk in the park, and he burned himself out at 1-1/8 mile race, are you kidding? As for blame he caught a great miler who can't even get in the extra 70 yards let alone an 1/8 or a 1/4 so why is Quality Road entered? Maybe because if he gets lucky his stud fees go sky high is my guess considering his presence in the dirt mile would be nothing short of a walk over.
No but who has in this field besides? Zenyatta on the synthetic?
This guy tries hard all the time, BUT has this one EVER won at 10 furlongs?
He really is a warrior mike!!! what a great story. Guy from Little Neck Queens buys a horse, Runs 3rd in the Derby and Preakness and now has a ligitamate shot at winning the Classic!! All I have to say is that Eric Fein makes us all feel like we all own him! Thanks Eric and Good Luck!!!
hes a warrior... he set the whitney up for Blame compromising his chances... He got a poor ride from Coa in Monmouth Cup and still almost won despite 5 jockeys outriding Coa... He lost by under 2 lenghths in the Met Mile, a nose in the Carter... Are you guys kidding.... This is an amazingly live horse who is always on the wire with the best horses in the country...
