After mulling all the options, trainer D. Wayne Lukas decided Thursday to enter 2009 Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird in the Grade 2, $175,000 Firecracker Handicap, the closing-day feature Sunday at Churchill Downs.

Lukas said Mine That Bird would not necessarily start in the Firecracker, a one-mile turf race, but that owners Mark Allen and Leonard Blach "thought they'd go ahead and spend the $875 entry fee and keep our options open." Read More

What the Nation is saying about Mine That Bird entered in Firecracker...

Mine That Bird, overrated cannot be overstated!! A little gelding that had everything go his way in the Triple Crown races in 2009. Caught a break with a sloppy track in the Derby. Ran 2nd in the Preakness to the most over-hyped filly in racing history that's beaten no one herself. The Belmont was the one race he did show some heart. Both he and Dunkirk were easily beaten by Summer Bird that day. But he did dig in and come back at Dunkirk. But he never had to race the best 3yr.old's of 2009. Because the all the best 3yr.old's of 2009 were all injured during the Triple Crown races. Quality Road, I Want Revenge, and The Pamplemousse all spring to mind immediately. Mine That Bird tries hard. But he's nowhere near the class that people try to make him out to be. He's extremely lucky to ever have a Grade 1 victory on his racing resume'. But he hasn't won another race since the 09' Kentucky Derby. JMO.
