Playing under the name "chestnut", Hom cites having multiple entries as a key to winning these big tournaments. "Playing the qualifiers during the week to get in on the cheap was important. It allows for spreading in wide open races," he said.
Hom qualified the maximum of 3 times for the Saturday $10K, which allowed him to make killer plays along the way.
His winning ticket scored $119.40 with the combined efforts of Minx, a $50 capper at Gulfstream, and the near-capper Cherubim at Santa Anita! He takes home the $5,000 first prize, which includes automatic entry in the $50,000 February game!
Joe Koury (joek) was second with a final score of $100.90 to win the $1,500 second prize with a spot in the $25K Game, while Steven Beck's (saratogasteve) $97.50 was enough for the third prize, $1,250.
Hom has been handicapping for nearly 20 years, starting off in high school going to "Friday night cards and dollar beers" at the late, beloved Bay Meadows.
"Going against really good handicappers has made me a better handicapper," said Hom. "You start to notice angles that the top players look for. So thats important to being successful. Also, playing games you are comfortable with. Ive sort of settled on the 10 man lockdowns and qualifiers."
