If they made a morning line for sale topping honors, the Tale of the Cat filly out of Meguial (Arg), by Roy, who was cataloged as Hip #6 in the Barretts March sale of selected two-year-olds in training would have been a longshot.
But when the half sister to 2009 Wood Memorial Stakes (G1) winner I Want Revenge went into the ring at Hinds Pavilion on Monday, heads started turning as the bidding quickly soared past $400,000 and finally ended at $975,000.
As it turned out, owner-breeder David Lanzman bought her back. Lanzman said he had no regrets for the aggressive reserve price.
“She’s my last one out of the mare. I sold Meguial privately to Argentina when I Want Revenge was a yearling, so I kind of wanted to keep this filly,” he said. “We set a reserve at a number where I wouldn’t be unhappy to lose her.
“She is a filly, so I’ll be connected to the family for 25 years. One more bid, I would have sold her, but I’m happy to keep her.”
Named A Story of Revenge, the filly will go back to NexStar in Temecula, California, where she was raised, Lanzman said. NexStar, agent, consigned her at Barretts.
