Lanerie starts fast at Ellis Park

Corey Lanerie made it to the winner's circle a couple of more times on Wednesday during the 89th opening day at Ellis Park, extending a run of success that has amazed even him.

Fresh off clinching the leading jockey title at Churchill Downs on Sunday after winning 11 of his last 19 starts at the Louisville track, Lanerie didn't waste any time making his presence felt at Ellis. In the first race of the meet, he guided Stitch's Publicpick to her first victory in a 5 ½ furlong claiming race for fillies and mares 3 years and older.

That made it a dozen wins in 20 races for the 37-year-old Louisiana native who aspires to be recognized as the top rider on the Kentucky-Louisiana circuit. The leading jockey honor at Churchill certainly is a step in that direction.
