Lady of Shamrock Headlines Gamely Stakes

Lady of Shamrock, who earned the first Grade I victory of her career in the 2012 American Oaks, will try to add another to her resume in the $250,000 Gamely Stakes Monday at Betfair Hollywood Park.

A 1 1/8 mile turf race for older fillies and mares, the Gamely, the first Grade I offered at the 2013 Spring/Summer meet, is part of a Memorial Day stakes doubleheader. The 10-race card also features the $100,000 Los Angeles Handicap, a Grade III for older horses at six furlongs over Cushion Track.

The 47th renewal of the Gamely goes as the ninth race while the 61st Los Angeles is the fourth.

Trained by John Sadler for Hronis Racing LLC, Lady of Shamrock won the American Oaks with a rail-skimming rally last July 14, then returned five weeks later to take the Grade I Del Mar Oaks.

Sidelined after finishing fifth in the Grade I Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf last Nov. 2 at Santa Anita, Lady of Shamrock has run twice as a 4-year-old. She was runner-up behind Tiz Flirtatious in the Grade II Santa Ana March 24, then won the Grade II Santa Barbara Handicap – due to the disqualification of Viva Carina – April 20.

A daughter of Scat Daddy and the Blushing John mare Blushing Issue, Lady of Shamrock has won seven of 13 and earned $825,400.

Sadler, who is seeking his first Gamely victory, will also send out longshot Miss Ellany.

An Irish-bred daughter of Kodiac and the Rainbow Quest mare Rainbowskia, the 4-year-old has won two of 11 and banked $17,435. She’s finished in front of only a single horse in two starts in the United States for Hronis Racing, LLC.

Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens, who has won the Gamely three times – most recently with Donna Viola in 1997 – will scale the comebacking Marketing Mix for trainer Tom Proctor.

Owned by breeder Glen Hill Farm, the 5-year-old Medaglia d’Oro mare has been away since finishing second to Zagora in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf.

Worse than second only once in seven starts in 2012, the Canadian-bred is a multiple graded stakes winner and has banked $1,659,518. Out of the Kris S. mare Instant Thought, Marketing Mix has won half of her 16 races.

The California-bred Tiz Flirtatious will be seeking her third consecutive win for owner-breeder Pamela C. Ziebarth and trainer Marty Jones.

Prior to her victory in the Santa Ana, the 5-year-old daughter of Tizbud and the Victory Gallop mare Masquerade Belle had defeated fellow state breds in the Valentine Dancer Jan. 26.

Never worse than second in five starts on grass, Tiz Flirtatious has won six of nine and banked $424,800.

Another California bred – Halo Dolly – will be aiming for her second stakes win of the meet, having captured the Grade III Wilshire Handicap April 28.

Owned by a partnership that includes George Todaro and Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, who won the 2010 Gamely with Tuscan Evening, the 5-year-old daughter of Popular and the Comic Strip mare Spanish Halo has won 15 of 29 and earned $752,786.

In her only previous appearance in a Grade I, Halo Dolly finished last of eight in the Flower Bowl Invitational last Sept. 29 over a yielding turf at Belmont Park.

My Gi Gi, who upset Lady of Shamrock in last year’s Grade II Honeymoon Handicap, will make her first start of 2013 for owners Dennis Conner, Lloyd DeBruycker and Wade Jacobsen and trainer Peter Eurton.

The 4-year-old E Dubai filly out of the Sadler’s Wells mare Relish the Thought, who has won two of 10 and earned $250,540, has been sidelined since finishing fifth in the Grade I Rodeo Drive – won by Marketing Mix – last Sept. 29 at Santa Anita.

Private Affair returns to Southern California after finishing fifth of 11 in the ungraded Golden Poppy Stakes April 7 at Golden Gate Fields.

Owned by Green Grass Stable and trained by Angel Rodriguez, the 6-year-old Peruvian-bred daughter of Privately Held and the Apprentice mare Adorada has won four of 14 and earned $211,753. She won a Group III in her native country in 2011.

From inside out, the field for the Gamely Stakes: Miss Ellany, Martin Pedroza rides, 117 pounds; Tiz Flirtatious, Julien Leparoux, 119; Private Affair, Omar Figueroa, 117; My Gi Gi, Edwin Maldonado, 119; Halo Dolly, Garrett Gomez, 123; Lady of Shamrock, Rafael Bejarano, 123 and Marketing Mix, Gary Stevens, 123.

That was just all class prevailing from Marketing Mix. Game effort by Tiz Flirtatious. Thought Lady of Shamrock would get a better setup but it didn't really play out for her today.
Marketing Mix to win with Halo Dolly second.
I think one of the longshots will try to go to the front and steal it. Marketing Mix; Lady of Shamrock; Halo Dolly; Tiz Flirtatious
Do they have a rabbit for Lady Of Shamrock?
