La Jolla Handicap Quotes

JOEL ROSARIO (Sidney's Candy) -- "John (trainer John Sadler) doesn't want me to fight him. We've got to let him do what he does. He broke so sharp and he just wanted to go. So I let him go. I knew we were going fast, but he's such a good horse he can do that. When we turned for home, I opened up with him. I didn't want to be caught. He just kept on going and he wasn't that tired at the end. He's a really nice horse."

DAVID FLORES (Kid Edward) -- "It was a good race for him. He was comfortable out there and running well. Those two horses up front (Sidney's Candy and Macias) were going so fast, I thought sure they'd come back to us. But Sidney's Candy is too much horse. But this was a good one for my horse. It will set him up well for the mile and an eighth (Del Mar Derby on Sept. 5)."

MIKE SMITH (Alphie's Bet) -- "This colt ran big today. Good race for him. The winner was gone."

JOHN SADLER  (Sidney's Candy) -- "I knew he was going to take care of the other horse, I was just a little worried that he might set it up for a closer. He's a very good horse and a unique horse in that he set a track record as a 2-year-old on the Polytrack [5 1/2 furlongs] and then again at 3 on the grass. He's a very good horse; a little unlucky in a couple of races and things didn't go right for him in Kentucky, but he's one of the best 3-year-olds around. This was a very fast race today. We'll see how he comes out of it before we go forward with him. And we have Twirling Candy [winner of the Oceanside Stakes], too. We'll have a lot of choices. I think I'll have the favorite in the Del Mar Derby."

In running 1:39.52 for the mile and one-sixteenth on the turf course, Sidney's Candy broke a course record of 1:39.67 set on September 2, 2006 by Mea Domina.

This is Sidney's Candy's second record-breaking performance at Del Mar. Last year, as a 2-year-old, he set a main track (Polytrack) record of 1:02.71 for five and one-half furlongs.

The stakes win was the third of the meet for rider Joel Rosario and his second in the La Jolla. He now has a total of 10 stakes wins at Del Mar.

The stakes win was the second of the meet for John Sadler, but his first in the La Jolla. He now has a total of 34 stakes wins at Del Mar, ninth best all-time among conditioners.
