Carlsbad resident Julie Krone, the
only female jockey in the Hall of Fame, is preparing to come out of retirement
for one race, a “Legends” event held annually in early September at Doncaster
Race Course in England. The event benefits an injured jockeys’ fund.
Krone’s regimen to shape up for the
competition has included riding morning workouts at Del Mar for Hall of Fame
trainer Richard Mandella, where she was found last week. In addition to
exercise riding, Krone said she has been working out for at least an hour a day
and taking classes in Tang Soo Do karate at Premier Martial Arts in Encinitas.
Krone, 47, noted that she has been
contacted by recruiters for the reality TV show “Survivor” for the past couple
years. She hasn’t been inclined to take up the challenge so far, but isn’t
ruling out the possibility of participating in the future.
“They say I’ve got appeal for a
(desirable) demographic,” Krone said. Read: Personable, female, athletic. “But
if I’d taken them up on it, I wouldn’t be here now. I’d be out wherever they’re
filming it.”
